As a gesture of gratitude to her longtime Synagogue, an elderly congregant delivered a hand-embroidered mantel for the new Torah Scroll. A cursory glance was enough to reveal the woman’s proficient talent. The lush fabric, colorful pattern and superb craftsmanship rendered the article a true work of art.
Delighted with the attractive gift, the Rabbi wasted no time in putting it to the test. He quickly removed the Torah from the ark and replaced the mantel with the new masterpiece.
As they shared a moment of delight adoring the lovely new cover, the Rabbi suddenly fell somber. To the disappointment of the onlookers, he shared his sobering discovery: The new cover was several inches shorter than the scroll.

LOS ANGELES, CA [CHI] — When the Anash children of Los Angeles heard about the great Lag Ba’Omer 5770 parade, featuring the world’s best Jewish singers and marking the special year 5770 – the following was heard amongst them: “I wish I can be at this parade,” said Yossie Plotke, a 12 year old from Cheder Menachem or “Can’t we fly cross country to be part of this historic celebration?” said Mendy Kievman, a 5th grader at the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach. Levi Weiss of Hancock Park was heard saying, “Why do all great events happen in Crown Heights? If only my parents would send me to 770 for the day.”
A police officer who was responding to an emergency was involved in a single vehicle accident as he was speeding down Brooklyn Avenue. In attempt to avoid collision with a car he swerved, went up on two wheels and flipped on his side.

CEDAR RAPIDS [CHI] — Federal prosecutors asked Federal Judge, Linda Reade today, Thursday to sentence Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin to 25 years in prison, less than the life sentence they initially requested.
Sholom Rubashkin, dressed in an orange jump suit and chains, gave a tearful speech at the end of his sentencing hearing in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids. He told the court he had made mistakes and was remorseful. In a thick Brooklyn accent, he reiterated that he was sorry for his actions, and that he was put in a position by his family of running the operations of a large plant for which he had no training or interest.
