RIVERDALE, NY [CHI] — Over 250 friends and supporters gathered this past Saturday evening, January 22, 2011, for a gala evening of dinner, entertainment, and tribute, celebrating the 19th anniversary of Chabad-Lubavitch of Riverdale, directed by Rabbi Levi Y. and Sorah Shemtov at the New York Botanical Garden. The honorees were Myrna & Eric Zinn, and Pamela & Barry Moskowitz.
In this weeks Halacha and the Parasha – Parashas Mishpatim – we discuss the matter of jury duty.
This Thursday, 22 Shevat, marks the passing of Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson (1901-1988) of righteous memory, wife of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. The Avner institute is pleased to present two charming encounters related by Rabbi Shmuel Lew, Headmaster of the Lubavitch Senior Girls School, London, U.K., whose family over the years had warm relations with the Rebbetzin.
With major airports, schools and businesses all closed due to the third major snow storm of the season, hundreds of shluchos boldly packed buses on the main thoroughfare of Eastern Parkway Thursday morning to take them to the Rebbe’s Ohel.
A reader sent in this photo of a very unique snowman, a snow Shlucha!
Bnos Menachem’s Chof Beis Shevat program went on despite the snowstorm with an incredible turnout. Bnos Menachem students and teachers braved the 19 inches of snow to commemorate the Yahrzeit of Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka with tremendous achdus and palpable spirit.
Despite the heavy snow that covered the streets of Crown Heights, some 200 girls trudged through the snow and gathered at the Rebbe and Rebbetzin’s home at 1304 President Street.
It isn’t the amount that makes a storm so bad, but that certainly helps. Crown Heights woke up this morning to well over 12 inches of snow, but this snow is physically heavy which makes it difficult to walk, shovel, plow and drive in.
At this hour children in United Lubavitcher Yeshiva on Crown Street are finnishing up Shacharis, and are about to start a regular day of learning. Despite the storm classes were mostly full this morning.
One of the inspiring speakers at 1993’s Kinus Hashluchos was Mrs. Esty Cohen (Rubin) OBM, a young Shlucha from Albany who would later build a family and a community in Manchester, England.
