Brooklyn Makes a Comeback

Ebbets Field – home of the Brooklyn Dodgers – in the 1930s (L); Barclays Center – Future home of the Brooklyn Nets – today (R).

Ask people what their favorite place is in America, and you will get many and varied answers. For some, the answer will be sites of natural beauty, such as the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone National Park. For others, the answer will be places of historic interest in Washington, D.C., such as the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, and the Washington Monument. For those who live for life’s excitement, the answer will be the dazzling skylines of Manhattan or Chicago.

You will get your most unusual answer from me: My favorite place in the United States of America is Brooklyn, New York, for its present, past, and future!

Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin’s motion for bail pending the outcome of his appeal has been denied by the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals. The Court handed down its decision in a brief sentence, before the defense could file its response to the government brief contesting the bail motion. The judges have not yet ruled on the appeal itself.

Jewish Communities Reflect on 17th Anniversary of Rebbe’s Passing

Former Israeli Chief Rabbi Israel Meir Lau addresses a Michigan event commemorating the anniversary of the Rebbe’s passing.

Jewish communities around the world are preparing for commemorative events celebrating the life and leadership of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. Timed to coincide with the 17th anniversary of the Rebbe’s passing on the third day of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, the myriad Chasidic gatherings, study sessions and inspirational lectures will focus on different aspects of teachings and work, but will all reflect the Rebbe’s clarion call for Jewish unity.

A school-bus driving on 47th Street and 12th Avenue, in Boro Park, Brooklyn went up in flames on Friday afternoon, sending thick black smoke through the streets. The bus was empty at the time of the fire, and was destroyed by the flames. There was no one injured in the incident.
