Harlem Gives Birth to First Torah Scroll in 75 Years

Rabbi Simon Jacobson talks about the power of a Torah scroll during a celebration of the first scroll to be commissioned in the New York City neighborhood of Harlem in 75 years.

Not too long ago, it might have been one of the least likely locations from where a religious scribe would start writing a Torah scroll, but on Sunday, families and friends affiliated with a Jewish center in the New York City neighborhood of Harlem gathered to celebrate just such an occasion.

It baffles me why so many authors and commenters on this website seem to feel as though people who do not act or think as they do are doing something wrong, and that they do so for all the same negative, prejudiced stereotype reasons (bad home, life, schooling etc). I am constantly reminded of the old saying that “everyone who does more than you is a fanatic and everyone who does less is an apostate.”

Mishpacha Magazine Profiles Rabbi Fishel Jacobs

Harold Jacobs — Jewish in his heart but not yet in practice — bought a poultry processing factory in Vermont and moved his family out to South Royalton (population 1,100) from Brooklyn when Flip/Philip/Fishel was ten. “Dad’s philosophy was, let the kids grow up in the country and they’ll be healthy.’ It would have been a good plan if I didn’t almost get myself killed in the process,” Rabbi Fishel Jacobs reminisces from his well-appointed study in Kfar Chabad, surrounded by an extensive library and piles of his own titles.
