As the world marks the 26th anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor explosion, Chabad’s Children of Chernobyl (CCOC) continues the work of saving the disaster’s youngest victims, having just completed its 97th rescue mission bringing 26 more children to safety and commemorating the 26 years since the Chernobyl disaster.

My story is not unique to me; it involves many of my comrades as well. Most of all it is about those who care for us. Moreover, the events that I write about are not in the past but ongoing, each week.

It all began in a bar’s basement, but now the Chabad Jewish Center is a state of the art facility. “We would joke, you go upstairs for the bar and come downstairs for the Mitzvah,” Rabbi Yitzchok Tiechtel said.
