NJ Gov. Appoints Shliach to Holocaust Commission

Rabbi Eli Kornfeld of Chabad of Hunterdon County in Annandale, NJ was appointed by Governor Chris Christie to serve on the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education with the Secretary of State’s Office.

The commission’s core mission, in part, is to promote Holocaust education in the state. The commission also surveys the status of Holocaust education, as well as designs, encourages and promotes the implementation of Holocaust and genocide education and awareness, according to the commission’s website at: www.state.nj.us/education/holocaust.

“Serving on this commission and being appointed by the governor is an honor and it’s humbling and it comes with a great responsibly,” Kornfeld said by phone recently following his appointment by the governor last week on the occasion Holocaust Remembrance Day, which began the evening of April 18 and ended the evening of April 19.

“It has personal relevance to me as someone who lost many, many tens of family members in the Holocaust myself. So there’s clearly that direct feeling and attachment.

“Therefore, I feel passionate ensuring that there is education and awareness for all New Jerseyans,” Kornfeld said. “New Jersey is at the forefront on a statewide level of Holocaust awareness and innovative programs.

“It’s an honor to represent Hunterdon County, to represent the entire community, the region, and I look forward to the challenge of serving on the commission along with some colleagues — great, incredible, well-respected members of the commission.

“It’s an honor,“ he concluded. ”There is a lot of work to be done, and I hope I will be able to do a good job for all New Jerseyans to ensure that Holocaust education and awareness continues and gets stronger.”
