Jews March on Rostov to Remember Massacre

Five hundred Jews, many wearing armbands with the Star of David, marched on Rostov-on-Don yesterday, August 12, in remembrance of the Zmievskaya Balka massacre. The men, women and youth followed the same route that the Jews of Rostov in southern Russia were forced by the Nazis to march on August 11-12 in 1942 where 27,000 people, among them also Soviet citizens, were murdered at a ravine on the edge of the city.

NYC Comptroller Calls on NYPD to Allow Beards

Fishel Litzman, a Hasidic Jew, was barred from entering the police force because he refused to shave his beard. He has filed a civil-rights lawsuit against the police department.

City Comptroller John C. Liu today called on Mayor Michael Bloomberg to reform NYPD policy to allow Orthodox Jewish and Sikh officers to serve without having to forsake their beards (and/or turbans).

Two student rabbis have been visiting San Antonio Jewish homes this past week, inspecting their mezuzahs — a ritual item posted on doorways — and offering to upgrade them for free.
