Gimmel Tammuz Special: Late Friday night, I walk the quiet streets of Crown Heights. Families are sitting around their Shabbos tables; the sounds of clatter and song drift from open windows on this cool night. I am making my way to the home of Harav Yoel Kahan, or Reb Yoel, as he is known. Each Friday night, he spends precious time with his students – who are like children to him – during the Shabbos meal.
Hundreds of children gathered for a rally in front of 770 this afternoon in honor of Gimmel Tammuz, where they sang songs with entertainer Chaim Fogelman and sat enthralled by storyteller Yitzy Erps.

In honor of Gimmel Tammuz, marking 20 years since the Rebbe’s Histalkus, we present two stories of the Chabad Rebbeim of yore that may help today’s Chassidim find perspective on this somber day, as written by renowned author Rabbi Sholom Dovber Avtzon.
Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, author of bestseller “Rebbe: The Life and Teaching of Menachem M. Schneerson, the Most Influential Rabbi in Modern History,” appeared on the Steve Malzberg Show to discuss the life and legacy of the Rebbe, and how he transformed a small Jewish movement into a worldwide phenomenon.
Gimmel Tammuz Special: Binyomin Wulliger, a diamond dealer, was active in Hassidic circles and spent many years as a liaison between the Chabad and Sanz communities. After a prolonged absence, the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, told him, “There’s something I’ve wanted to speak to you about for a long time.”

Gimmel Tammuz Special: Canadian land developer Louis Mayzel was upbeat and good-hearted, but above all, he was a man of action. Once when Louis was very broken, a fellow real estate developer suggested that he travel to the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, to ask his advice on coping with the situation.
As evening sets we begin observing Gimmel Tammuz, hundreds are already at the Ohel and are joined by thousands more who make their way to visit our father, the Rebbe.
