In this week’s edition of Letter & Spirit, in honor of Purim, we present a letter from the Rebbe in which he gives encouraging words to a woman who is making efforts to advance in Torah and mitzvos – connecting her efforts to those of Queen Esther in saving her people. The letter was written through the Rebbe’s trusted secretary Rabbi Nissan Mindel, and was made available by the latter’s son-in-law, Rabbi Sholom Ber Shapiro.

After TV talk show host Ellen Degenres dared her viewers to post videos of themselves dancing behind unassuming strangers, tens of thousands obliged, resulting in many hilarious – or not so hilarious – videos. In honor of the joyous holiday of Purim, comedian and street-comic Meir Kalmanson filmed his own such video in Jerusalem.

Old directories indicate that there was once a functioning mikvah in Bucktown, a Chicago neighborhood just northwest of the Loop—the city’s central business district—now known for its older single-family homes, new builds with edgy architecture and converted industrial loft spaces.
In April of 1988, newly-elected Knesset Member Benjamin Netanyahu visited the Rebbe. The Rebbe said to him: “I had much satisfaction from your first speech in the Knesset. Continue along this approach, for it is the best path to avoid war. You will have to struggle with 119 others in the Knesset, but surely you won’t be intimidated, because G-d is on this side.”
Usually a harbinger of spring, this year Purim day will be a harsh reminder of the lingering winter’s record-breaking snow and cold, with 3-5 inches expected to accumulate on the streets of winter-weary New York.
Alternate side parking (street cleaning) regulations will be suspended Wednesday, March 3, due to snow operations, and Thursday, March 5, for the observance of Purim. All other regulations, including parking meters, remain in effect.
