Dani Ash was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) in 1982, three years into his parents’ eight-year “career” as refuseniks—Jews forced into an underground life of fear, privation and incarceration after their application to leave for Israel was denied by Soviet authorities, and they were deemed a threat to the state. Today, Rabbi Dani and Rivka Ash co-direct a bustling Chabad center in the same city he left as a child, never dreaming that he would one day return.

2,000-Year-Old Jewish Settlement Uncovered in Beer Sheva
For the first time, the remains of a Jewish settlement of the Second Temple period have been discovered in Beer Sheva. The archaeological excavation carried out to facilitate a new neighborhood near the northern entrance to Beer Sheba has revealed evidence of Jewish day-to-day life there, including part of an oil lamp decorated with a nine-branched menorah – one of the earliest yet discovered by researchers – as well as limestone vessels used by Jews for reasons of ritual purity, a watchtower and more.

NY Adds $25 Million Security Funding for Non-Public Schools
The New York State Legislature announced an additional $25 million to fund security for protect nonpublic schools, day cares and cultural museums at risk of hate crimes. For the first time, summer camps also will receive the security grant allocations.
