Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet

Addressing a United Synagogue council meeting this past Monday night, made up of delegates from all the synagogues, Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet, chairman of the Rabbinical Council of the United Synagogue said, “when there is this whole challenge to the legality of Jewish identity – absurd as it may be – it compels us to challenge ourselves and to consider, what are we doing about the morality of Jewish identity?’”

An Appeals Court ruling last month said that Jewish schools in the UK could not discriminate against children with only a Jewish father who identify themselves as Jewish. In response, all Jewish schools implemeted a points system whereby one has to attend synagogue on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The Rebbetzin’s Diary – Food, Family and the High Holy Days

By Rebbetzin Sara Osdoba for the BBC

Hi, I’m Sara. As a Jewish Orthodox woman, I’ve been asked to write a diary during our Holy Days and Festivals.

For those of you who don’t know, our new year begins tonight. It is then followed by Yom Kippur – the Day of Atonement, and finally by Sukkot – which lasts a week.

So why was I asked to write a diary? Well, it all started 19 years ago on a trip to New York when I met my husband.

How we met is a topic for a different day, but the fact that he was a Rabbi was not something I thought a lot about at the time.

However (a word of caution to those planning to marry a man of the cloth), once I married a Rabbi, I soon came to learn that I would have to share him with a community. In fact, in the Jewish world, the wife of the Rabbi even gets a title – Rebbetzin.

The Fast of Gedalia

The fast end at 7:26pm (in NYC), for the Zmanim in your area visit Chabad.org

Today is a fast day mourning the assassination of the Jewish royal Gedaliah ben Achikam, governor of the Land of Israel for a short period following the destruction of the First Temple.

Gedaliah’s killing spelled the end of the small remnant of a Jewish community that remained in the Holy Land after the destruction, which fled to Egypt. (According to many opinions, the assassination of Gedaliah actually occurred on Rosh Hashanah, but the commemoration of the event is postponed to the day after the festival; when the day after Rosh Hashanah is a Shabbat the fast is postponed to Tishrei 4.)
