Reward Offered in Mineola Swastika Incident

MINEOLA, NY — Authorities are offering a $6,000 reward to catch whoever spray-painted swastikas on a Long Island synagogue.

The swastikas were left last week on the front doors of the Congregation Beth Shalom Chabad in Mineola.

1. This week’s Torah portion tells us the famous story regarding Pinchas (Phinehas) and how he killed Zimri the prince of the tribe of Shimon (Simeon), thereby pleasing Hashem greatly Who declared that Pinchas deserves a reward for, “zealously avenging My vengeance”.

If this is the case regarding the Oral Law, surely regarding the Written Law (Torah Shebichsav), from which our Sages learn numerous laws from even one letter, there must be a novelty in the story of Pinchas.

Report: Drivers in NY Rush Hour Wasted 380 Million Hours

NEW YORK, NY — Drivers in the New York area wasted nearly 380 million hours stuck in rush-hour traffic in 2007 – second only to those in Los Angeles – according to a traffic study released Wednesday.

The average motorist in the New York area lost 44 hours in 2007 because of rush-hour traffic congestion, according to the Urban Mobility Report conducted by the Texas Transportation Institute.

Rabbi Proposes ‘Virtual’ Kosher Supervision

ISRAEL — The extended hours at Be’er Sheva bars and restaurants have brought the proprietors an additional expense: paying kashrut supervisors. So the city’s chief rabbi, Yehuda Deri, proposed a solution: placing cameras in restaurant kitchens in order to send video feeds straight to the supervisors of Jewish dietary law.

Deri, the brother of former Shas leader Aryeh Deri, believes the idea will save businesses money while improving kashrut supervision.

Police arrest Brooklyn man in serial gropings of women in Crown Heights

Police arrested a 21-year-old Brooklyn man last night after three Crown Heights women identified him as the serial slapper terrorizing the tight-knit neighborhood, cops said.

Frankie Hatton of Saratoga Ave., who sources said has confessed to five incidents and has a history of mental illness, was charged with forcible touching and […] abuse.

A dozen women in the area have been slapped on the buttocks since June 19, police said. The slapper last attacked Tuesday.
