Girl on a Bike Struck by a Van

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A nine year old Jewish girl was struck by a van as she was crossing a street in a crosswalk. The incident took place on Brooklyn and Crown at around 6:00pm today, Tuesday the van was making a right turn from Brooklyn and stuck the girl.

The driver immediately stopped and called 911, while witnesses called Hatzalah, all of whom responded within moments and began treating the young girl for a leg injury and then transported the girl to a local hospital for further treatment.

Rubashkin: It’s all a lie

NEW YORK, NY [JTA] — Aaron Rubashkin, the owner of the embattled kosher slaughterhouse Agriprocessors, denies he has engaged in unethical labor practices and blames the failure of U.S. immigration policy for his mostly illegal workforce.

In the first substantive comments by an Agriprocessors representative since the government rounded up more than a third of its employees on immigration charges in a May 12 raid of its Iowa plant, Rubashkin flatly denied allegations of worker mistreatment and plant mismanagement.

ST LOUIS, MO — University City police are investigating the disappearance of one of the Torahs belonging to Congregation Bais Menachem — Chabad on Delmar. Rabbi Yosef Landa and the congregation discovered the Torah was missing during Shabbat services on May 24.

“When we opened the ark for the Torah service I realized one of the Torahs was missing,” Landa said. “A big gasp went up throughout the congregation.”

New Book Presents Mikvah Use to Russian-Speaking Audience

Mayim Chaim discusses Judaism’s laws of
family purity in easy-to-understand Russian.

Jewish community officials in the former Soviet Union hailed the publication of a book about mikvah use written entirely in Russian.

Entitled Mayim Chayim, or “Living Waters,” and written by Rabbi Michael and Sima Koritz, the book presents the laws of family purity in an easy to understand manner, said Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Boruch Gorin, editor of Moscow’s Lechaim Publishing House.

Gorin’s organization, a unit of the Federation of Jewish Community of the Former Soviet Union, joined with New York’s F.R.E.E. Publishing House to release the volume.

Black Teen Shot on Brooklyn Ave, in Serious Condition

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A 19 year old Black teen is in serious condition after being shot four times following an argument on Empire and Brooklyn. The incident took place at around 10:00pm in front of 441 Brooklyn Avenue, a large apartment building, which is home to many Jews, where an argument was going on between a large group of Black teens when witnesses say 5 shots rang out.

Chabad of Plantation, Florida Groundbreaking!

PLANTATION, Florida [CHI] — This past Sunday, June 1st, Chof Zayin Iyar, hundreds of supporters gathered together on the site of the future home of Chabad of Plantation.

Since 1993, Chabad of Plantation, led by Rabbi Mendy Posner and his wife Chanie, has been located in a small storefront. This has limited the ability to grow and to start new programs.
