Black Teen Shot on Brooklyn Ave, in Serious Condition

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A 19 year old Black teen is in serious condition after being shot four times following an argument on Empire and Brooklyn. The incident took place at around 10:00pm in front of 441 Brooklyn Avenue, a large apartment building, which is home to many Jews, where an argument was going on between a large group of Black teens when witnesses say 5 shots rang out.

911 was called and police responded along with EMS and began treating the 19 year old victim for four gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, lower back and chest, putting him in serious condition and he is expected to survive.

Eye witnesses to the incident said that the argument was going on in front of 441 Brooklyn when the shots rang out, and one person was seen limping across the street, then collapsing in front of 440 Brooklyn. The group then broke up and fled.

Some Jewish and Black residents at the scene got really worked up as cops began moving the crowd back and set up a crime scene, “if you did your job then this wouldn’t happen” one resident told police officers.

Police officers were overheard by bystanders saying that there were surveillance videos of the entire incident, which showed a handgun being given to a Black female who fled into the building.

An hour and a half after the incident police entered the building with detectives and the Emergency Service Unit and came out with one Black female in handcuffs, who apparently was involved in the argument, possibly being the reason for the argument.

I don’t know why we need cops on the corners, it’s such a quiet and peaceful neighborhood, no?

this all starts from watching ‘innocent’ cartoons. Parents watch what your children watch and even more watch what YOU watch

  • Crown Heights Reality

It is amazing how no one will report that tonight a black teen was shot in Crown Heights near the 71 pct. blocks from where a police officer was killed last summer.

Yes, instead of focusing on racial tensions in Crown Heights, you should concentrate on the violence and crimes that criminals are perpetrating in Crown Heights. That can easily be avoided if the police can do their job. Arrest the loiterers and the guns and knives will disappear. It worked during the Giuliani administration. It can work now if you will only accept reality that without education there will always be crime. Until then the police need to be able to do their job without fearing retribution from the liberal establishment who mostly live in well educated low crime rate neighborhoods.

Kelly and Bloomberg have the gall to claim that crime is down in Crown Heights. Police Officers are told to avoid reporting crime where possible.

Wake up and smell the coffee, don’t blame racial tensions when there is none. Call a spade a spade. IT IS CRIME AND ONLY CRIME that is the issue in Crown Heights. If you are jealous that others are trying to correct this problem then emulate them. By joining their patrol and see first hand how crime is out of hand!

hey pentax were r u 2day.?wats yr. comment today ? such nice people.and i love the way they setell ther diffrances

  • Let-s get the facts straight

While reading this article I was struck by the comment “if you were doing your job, this wouldn’t happen,” addressed to the police. Let’s not confuse issues…how can the police know omnisciently which arguments will get out of control…the police are not able to prevent every crime, this is something each of us is responsible for by raising our kids to stay out of trouble…there are laws that protect citizens’ rights to bear arms…the fact that crime happens and that guns end up in the hands of those who use them irresponsibly is really an issue to address in US policies …not at the police who also are wounded and killed by gun violence.

WE MUST HAVE MORE CAMS OUT ON THE STREET WATCHING WATS GOING ON. THE THE YOUNG FOLKS WILL THINK TWICE B/4 DOING

I’m very sorry to hear, that a black kid was shot. because, if it’s not safe for them, in the neighborhood, it’s not safe for us.

  • crown heightser

nice to see their true colors show, let everyone see who we are really dealing with!

  • NEED MORE CAMS in EVERY BUILDING

Need more CAMS in every building !!!
When people know that there is watching eye they behave MUCH BETTER.

Jewish principal in Bronx worth school installed CAMS everywhere and now it is one of the best schools in the area.

Can we all make a petition to landlords to put CAMS inside and outside of the buildings?

  • A Neighbor

Let-s get the facts straight, you are right in saying that the police are not able to prevent every crime.

However, we aren’t talking about a bunch of innocent teenagers. These kids have been hanging out in front of the buildings for the last few days and have been making trouble. The police were called earlier in the night to break them up. It didn’t work.

Those who live nearby knew this was a situation waiting to happen. Why couldn’t the police see that? Or why couldn’t they care enough to do something.

So yes, if they were doing their jobs, this wouldn’t have happened.

7 shots- I was there, too. And I only heard 5 shots.

To all the above comments defending police actions & to those saying ‘i was there by the gunshots“ :
a- the argument was full-fledged when I passed by at 8:45 pm!
I wathced from a distance and called the police by 9 PM b/c no one seemed to care that it was getting violent..
***if this news article is accurate.. the police came at 10 PM AFTER THE GUNSHOTS WERE FIRED?! I was promised someone would be there soon, and there is normally a patroller on that very corner or at most a few blocks up!! how did it get to the point of gunfire?!
I didn’t stay around to see the results but somehow I am not surprised it ended in this unfortunate way.
b- to all the ”proud witnesses”.. When you saw the violence growing, starting 8:45 the latest, did you bother to call police/ shomrim?? Or while it was still fistfights, you glanced, rolled your eyes, and rushed on??? Only when there was a victim of a shot you stopped to see what was going on??! What is this.. when I passed the scene there were loads of guys rushing by not stoppingto see what they can do.. what about all the Jews in the bldg and surrounding area??!
    shame on you I say
Your first step is to stop, help- in this case call backup (I believe my 911 call was the first) and only afterward gloat on your accomplishments!!
May this be the last such article

    I am here relax…

Again I see people blaming the cops
for the shooting as if the criminal who
actually shot the person doesn’t matter.

Look having a cop on every corner 24/7
is not going to happen OK. Instead
of whinnying every time a cop does something wrong call the CCRB thats what there for, cops hate them because every time someone calls, the cop gets investigated.

Listen your not in Beverly Hills,
    your in a terrible neighborhood,
right next to Bed-stuy,East New York,
    East flatbush whatever..Don’t expect
it to be heaven even if you have a cop
    everywhere because it aint happening.

Most Jews moved out of there because
of the crime surge back in the day
and you stayed because the Rebbe told
you to, thats fine and I respect that
but I don’t remember the Rebbe saying
there will be NO crime….Take it as
a test and keep fighting the crime.

  • bhoffinger

    B“H
Law abiding Blacks don’t like crime either. Let’s have a united effort by both communities to put up surveillance cameras in many more locations.
The Rebbe, MH”M was for unity everywhere!

  • Don-t stick up for the dirty cops!!

Don’t stick up for the cops. because if you had a gun and you went to protect yourself agents a black man trust me you would be in jail before the black man. and yes the cops are you blame they really could care less about what is going on. they themselves are scared. I approached a cop and told him there were some black boys playing late at night and destroying all the cars on the block. The cops said i cant do anything the boy didn’t KILL anyone yet !!!!!!!! so what the cop is trying to say they don’t care Until there is a murder! and even then if its a jew.

  • ch res

we should not watch or hear and wait till you hear gun shots. When you see them having a heated argument call 911 right away.

  • Moses

if the shooter was not afraid to do this less than 1 block away from a police station then why does anyone think that having more police will stop the crime surge?

  • Could of GD Forbid got shot to!

Its a good thing no one called shomrim because they probly would of tryd to stop the fight and could of gd forbid got shot to!

  • Concerned former resident

As former resident of Crown Heights if hurts me very much to see the Jewish community go through this painful ordeal on daily basis.
The most peaceful people in the world live side by side with this animals who have no regards for their own life or anybody else’s.
It’s a no win situation, unless the neighborhood becomes more expensive and people with higher “moral” standards move in.

  • A Neighbor

To Rivky- Yes, we called the cops. Multiple times. Every night. This group of teens has been making trouble for awhile already. And yet, the cops don’t show up. Not even once. Awhile ago, there was a group smoking weed on the sidewalk and we called the cops. They didn’t show up until 4 hours later!!!! By that time, it was all over and there was nothing they could do.

Do you think I wanted to be a witness? Unfortunately, I live nearby and it was unavoidable. I’m far from “proud”.

  • to 7 shots

    to 7 shots:
there were only 5 shots. i was there. what r u trying to do, trying to find a way to make a correction?

  • Please think first

To the person who was quoted as addressing the police with the comment “if you were doing your job then this wouldn’t happen” I would like to say this: We are all suffering from the lack of the police department’s effective handling of crime in our neighborhood and should be doing our utmost to EFFECTIVELY get the police to take our safety seriously. However, crimes such as shootings during an argument happen in cities all over, and can not all be prevented by the police. It is not in our best interest to talk rudely to the police and blame them for things which are not their fault. We can only demand, in a firm but Mentchlich way that they do their job to protect us.

  • Right to bear arms

Fight the right to “bare arms” – don’t wear short sleeves!

  • neighbor

There was a full force argument going on around 9:20, from what I know, the cops came and left. I was not there but heard it was very tense and looked like trouble.I know some people who were scared to walk past as they were scared. It is not a surprise that something happened, this was very very tense prior to the shooting.

“35 yrs in the hood wrote:

pentax i know yr blk but r also a cop?”
Why would either of these dumb questions make a difference?

Is there side I should know about?

I know of the Law abiding vs Criminals,
if there is another side you want the community to know go ahead and say it now.

  • OTnick to Pentax

why do you think thet the cops are so great? and if thay are, why is thir so much crime?

becus thay are not good. that simpel. you dont live in ch.

  • ral

yes, i agree, i think if there are blacks wanting to kill each other – excuse me – why should the men in our community stick our necks out. for cying out loud – that was not why this group was formed. if the police dept doesnt care only add ridiculously huge chunks of logic to this fact.

  • Rivky/ Dear hurt neighbor

Sorry I didn’t mean to offend.. I didn’t realize how crazy it’s been in that area even though I pass through it often.Sorry you have to constantly go through this.
I am glad someone, or a few people, care enough about the situation to do as much as they can to help, rather than just watch, comment and complain! My original comment to the “gawkers”(somewhat changed and therefore misconstrued..) was addressed to the passive passers-by and those now pointlessly analysing how many/where/when the gunshots were, but who did nothing at the time.
Ch”v do I criticize the ppl locked up in those scary bldgs having to watch all this and wait and wait for the police or some reprieve!
And I hope my comments on the slow and inadequate police response will be noticed by ppl in positions of authority and/or those capable of effecting a change in our crazy community.
PEOPLE: STOP READING, ANALYZING, COMMENTING, SEEING PHOTOS…!! THOSE WHO CAN (ALL OF US).. ACT, DO S/T, EVEN IF ITS A KAPITEL FOR SAFETY OF C’H WHICH MAYBE PARALLELS THAT OF E’Y!! STOP TALKING, HAMAASEH HU HA’IKAR!!!

  • bklyn dad

from my understanding of the incident, the surveillance footage came from the cameras in the apartment building. Because of this, an arrest was made an hour later. all landlords in the area should have cameras like their’s. i wish my building did.

thank you sperlins for putting up cameras in 763 eastern pkwy

It’s so sad in today’s era, how people exclude them selves from humanity as if they’ve accented to some where greater. Please, people! We’re all in this together, regardless of your religion, & skin tone. All of us are prone to violence, you don’t have to be a kushim for it to manifest.
So instead of having the beleive and raising your children to think that black people are evil and deserve to kill each other, take a look in the mirror and do some reflection, before passing judgement. It looks like most of you are turning the table on kusmin, don’t make that mistake. What u don’t like for yourselves don’t try to push it on someone else. We’re all God’s creation & are special and equal in his sight. Who are you to say otherwise.
