With sadness we inform you of the passing of HaRav HaChossid Rabbi Sholom HaKohen Shurpin OBM of Crown Heights at the age of 95.

Rabbi Sholom is survived by his children, Yiabadlu Lechaim Tovim, R. Yosef Shurpin (Crown Heights) and Mrs. Sima Simpson (Crown Heights).

The Levaya will take place on Thursday, and will be leaving from the Shomrei Hadas Chaple at around 10:15am and will be passing by 770 at around 10:45am.

Three Car Collision on Eastern Parkway

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Three cars were involved in an accident earlier today at around 12:30pm. The incident took place at the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Albany Avenue where a car waiting by the stop sign in the service lane was struck from the rear and sent flying into the intersection and into another car, that car subsequently lost control and crashed in the brick fence of the Chanoch Lanaar building.

Nelson Is Out Again, 6 Cars Hit in 2 Nights

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — in the past two night’s five cars were broken into and valuables ranging from potable GPS units to loose change were taken. Two cars were hit on New York Avenue, one on Brooklyn Avenue and another three in alleyways inside their owner’s garages.

A Shomrim coordinator told CrownHeights.info that Terrance Nelson, also known as Derrick Nelson, was spotted yesterday morning roaming the streets of Crown Heights, and is believed to be behind the break-ins.

TOMORROW NIGHT: Precinct Council Meeting

Due to holiday of Purim the monthly Precinct Council Meeting was pushed off and it will take place tomorrow, Thursday March 27th, in the public school on Empire and New York [diagonally across from the police station] and it begins at 7:30 in the evening.

The meeting is open to all residents who are encouraged to attended and show their support and interest in the police business and the community. Also, at the end of the meeting residents are given the opportunity to raise questions and concerns which are addressed to by the Commanding officer of the Precinct, D.I. Frank Vega.

Issues on the agenda are a spike in car break-ins, cell phone muggings and police mistreatment of residents and Shomrim members.

Residents are urged to attend and show support and solidarity.

The Joy of Purim in Small Communities of Western Ukraine

ZHITOMIR, Ukraine [CHI] — It’s became already a usual thing that Jews in the little communities in the western Ukraine receive packages before holidays. So it was also before Purim the year.

449 kids and teenagers in more than 70 towns and villages received delivery with many types of sweets and a Megilas Ester in Russian. Also for 2513 adult Jews from about 150 settlements the mail service brought deliveries of “Mishloach Manot” to their homes.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — This past Sunday hundreds of Crown Heights children enjoyed an amazing carnival run by the 8th grade boys from United Lubavitcher Yeshiva and OTEG (Oholei Torah Eight Grade), the boys all were ready at their posts at 1:00pm when the fun began, the children just kept on coming and enjoying over 20 booths including a moon bounce, face painting, raffles, prizes and much more.

Princeton Students Spend Spring Break in Jerusalem Yeshiva

American college students learn a little bit of Torah at Jerusalemís Mayanot Institute of Jewish Studies during a summertime Taglit-birthright Israel trip.

While their classmates spent time letting loose at resort locations around the world, four American university students spent their spring break living as yeshiva students at Jerusalem’s Mayanot Institute of Jewish Studies.

Purim at the Lebanon Border!

TZFAT, Israel [CHI] — Like every year, Talmidim of Yeshivas Tzeirei Hashluchim went out for “Mivtza Purim” at the border of Lebanon. Armed with Megillas and Mishloach Monos wearing different types of costumes and with much energy and excitement did the Bochurim go out to conquer the army bases at the border of Lebanon.

Los Angeles Rabbi, wife start a Chabad in Moorpark

Rabbi Shimon and Devorah Heidingsfeld, with their son, Yossi, say the Chabad will be open to all Jews.

MOORPARK, CA — Because of the lack of places for Moorpark’s Jewish community to meet on a regular basis, a Los Angeles rabbi and his wife have decided to start a Chabad in the city.

Rabbi Shimon and Devorah Heidingsfeld held the first gathering of the Chabad last week, and about 50 residents gathered for a Purim celebration at the Arroyo Vista Community Center in Moorpark. The event featured an interactive reading of the Megillah, the biblical book of Esther, as well as a costume party and food.
