The Weekly Sedra – Sukkos: Moving (Forward) In Circles

Rabbi Yossi Kahanov Shliach to Jacksonville, FL

Reb Shneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of the Chabad system of chassidic philosophy, was for a time, a disciple of Reb Menachem of Vitebsk (until the latter left Russia for the Holy Land in1777).

One year on Simchas Torah, before Hakkafos (the circular procession with which the holiday of Simchas Torah is identified), the entire synagogue was waiting for Reb Menachem Mendel to begin the recitation of the preceding verses, beginning with Atoh Hareisa. After a long unexplained silence, R’ Menachem approached R’ Shneur Zalman and said: “I perceive a hundred different ways to interpret this passage, but I cannot translate them into practice. I would hence prefer to refrain from reciting it.”

Reb Shneur Zalman protested: “But a person can never stand at the place which his eyes behold; for when he reaches that point he will see even farther. It is typical for this scenario to repeat itself again and again. So Rebbe, when you have realized these hundred ideas in practice, you will perceive yet more ideas and insights, and there will be no end to the matter.”

The Rebbe was quite pleased with this answer, and at once proceeded to recite: Atoh Hareisa. . .

The month of Tishrei encompasses the entire spectrum of the human experience. As the month steadily progresses, we move from the state of introspection of Rosh Hashanah; to the state of emotion of Yom Kippur; to the state of action associated with the holiday of Sukkos. The action associated with the holiday of Sukkos includes the building of booths – known as Sukkos – for outdoor dwelling, as well as the binding and bringing together of the four species in a special ritual.

The Sader of the Childrens Hakofos in 770

Simchas Torah is primarily a Yom Tov which is celebrated as a family. Fathers dance happily together with their children and the Sifrei Torah.

However, as Chassidim, the Rebbe has taught us the importance of being mesameach other Yidden, and therefore the men and older boys go on Tahalucha, leaving the women and children at home, with little opportunity to participate in any Hakofos.

For this reason, we are making a special Hakofos in 770 where children will be able to experience Hakofos in the Rebbe’s Shul. The Hakofos will only be on Thursday night, thenight of Tahalucha.

• The downstairs Shul will be open for women and children at 7:25p.m. Upon entering the shul women and girls will have the Zechus of kissing the Rebbe’s Sefer Torah, between 7:25pm and 7:40pm.

• Marriv will begin at 7:15pm. After Marriv Kiddush will be made, the children will receive flags, and Hakofos will begin.

• After Hakofos the boys will have the Zechus of kissing the Rebbe’s Sefer Torah.

Special Delivery Gives Jamaicans First-Ever Opportunity to Fulfill Sukkot Mitzvah

by Joshua Runyan – Chabad.org

Jamaica’s only functioning synagogue, in the capital city of Kingston

For as long as anybody can remember, Jewish Jamaicans have never had a real set of the Four Species, otherwise known as a lulav and etrog, during Sukkot. The island has few date palms and no willows, let alone no etrogs and a strict import policy when it comes to produce. Despite holding on to a vestige of the Sukkot necessities, when it came to the real thing, the community of some 200 has always done without.

Until this year.

PEORIA, IL — Michael Uretzky liked seeing friends.

Blake Randell liked the magic tricks.

Esther Langsam enjoyed making an edible sukkah.

And her father, Rabbi Eli Langsam, liked seeing children and adults fulfill two commandments of Jewish law: Sitting in a sukkah and shaking a lulav and an etrog, two main components of the Feast of Sukkot.

Army Pfc. Gavin Ellman, expecting a delivery of a lulav and etrog just before Sukkot, found herself Tuesday without a set of the biblically-mandated Four Species waved at specific points during the holiday’s prayer services. From Forward Operating Base Kalsu in Iraq, Ellman then quickly e-mailed Capt. Shlomo Shulman, a chaplain stationed at Camp Striker in Baghdad, to see if he could rush a delivery by helicopter.

Lucky for the servicewoman, Shulman had an extra set, delivered earlier by the Chabad-Lubavitch Aleph Institute.

Indonesian Native Returns Home From the UK for Sukkot

by Dovid Zaklikowski – Chabad.org

Growing up in Surabaya, Indonesia, Dovid Sayers did not know much about Jewish life, but his classmates always reminded him that he was Jewish. His first name, significantly different from the local variant of Dued, said it all. He was constantly bullied; one time a girl threw a stick at his face following the release of an American movie about Christianity.
