GOSHEN, NY — The parents of a 4-month-old infant were killed in a crossover crash on Route 17 westbound this afternoon, police said.
The man and woman were in a gray Lumina traveling eastbound when the driver apparently went off the right shoulder, overcorrected, veered across two lanes and the grassy median and into oncoming traffic in the westbound lanes, police said. The Lumina, T-boned by a Camry, then rolled over.
The infant was taken by ambulance to Hackensack, N.J., hospital. Two people in the Camry, a couple from Middletown, were taken to the Arden HIll campus of Orange Regional Medical Center in Goshen.
The crash had traffic westbound outside of Exit 125 at a standstill. Cars were backed up as far as at least Exit 126, with spillover traffic at a crawl in the parallel Route 17M. Motorists were advised to avoid the area. Traffic eastbound on Route 17 is moving but slowly.
Route 17 has been the scene of numerous such cross-over crashes, prompting the state Department of Transportation to install metal barriers in the grassy median. This one section had not yet had the barriers installed though the work was only about half a mile away from the crash scene.
