New Selichot With Russian Translation

BROOKLYN, NY [CHI] — This week, the F.R.E.E. Publishing House, the publishing arm of Friends of Refugees of Eastern Europe, in a cooperative effort between the Lechaim Publishing House (Moscow) and the SHAMIR Publishing House (Jerusalem) have issued for the first time the “Selichot” (Prayers of Repentance) with a modern Russian translation, all in a clear new Russian and Hebrew typesetting.

Police To Step Up Patrols During Jewish High Holidays

The NYPD is taking steps to protect the city’s Jewish community from terrorism during the upcoming High Holidays.

Commissioner Ray Kelly said Wednesday that there is no reason to believe an attack is in the works, but they are stepping up police presence to be prepared, as they have in years past.

TRAGEDY: Bochur Killed in the Subway

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — The harrowing message came down the wire early this morning, at around 8:00am, that there was a victim struck by a train and killed L”A in the Kingston Avenue Subway station.

Hatzalah, Shomrim and Chesed Shel Emes all arrived on scene along with NYPD ESU and FDNY EMS and tended to the victim, who was killed instantly.

Chabad.org took the world of viral media up a notch with the release this week of a High Holiday greeting featuring Rabbi Itchy Kadoozy, the lead character from the highly popular “Itchy Kadoozy” cartoon featured on the Web site.

Civil Rights Advocates: NYPD Undermines Review Board

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Police Department has short-circuited a civilian oversight panel formed in the early 1990s by being blatantly dismissive of the panel’s investigations of wayward officers, according to a new study.

An analysis of the Civilian Complaint Review Board’s performance in recent years “allows for no other conclusion than this: The city’s civilian oversight system has failed,” the report says. ”It has been subverted and co-opted by the police department.”

Both police and CCRB officials called the findings released Wednesday by the New York Civil Liberties Union unfair and too reliant on outdated statistics.
