Illustrating That Looks Aren’t Everything

NEW YORK — Sometimes, all it takes to make good art is to point a finger — or a camera — at our world’s most telling peculiarities. That, at least, is how many leading artists feel these days: They believe that content, presented as transparently as possible, is what ought to matter most; artsy form can only interfere. Photographers Andrea Robbins and Max Becher have made a career of such telling transparency. Their razor-sharp photographs seem like nothing more than windows open on the strangeness in the world. It’s an effect that in itself demands an artful eye.

Simchas Torah Shlichus from Crown Heights

By Aliza Karp

The Arba Minim represent Jews with different characteristics all coming together. On Simchas Torah we put down the Arba Minim, signifying that our differences have now become nullified, and we dance together as one. But once inside 770, the people dancing together are people who are similar. How is the unity that transcends the Arba Minim applied to Jews who are not in 770?

TAHALUCHA! Tahalucha is Ahavas Yisroel. Tahalucha is Achdus. Tahalucha is Shlichus on Yom Tov. And most of the guys walking for hours hardly realize it. They go on Tahalucha because the Rebbe said to go. They make no Cheshboynos. And yet they are walking for hours to reach their destination, and then walking back. And they are doing it for Jews they have never met.

A Tahalucha Story!

From the Inbox

Melbourne, Australia — I want to share a story with you that just happened.

On Shmini Atzeres after Mincha, I walked down to a small suburb called Elwood together with my good friend Eli G. Elwood was once a large Jewish epicenter. It has a beautiful Shul with over 1400 seats, but people have long moved out to other suburbs, and aside for Rosh Hashanah Yom Kippur, its usually pretty empty expect for a few old men and woman. That being said, we were eager to follow the Chabad custom to go on Tahalucha and bring some life and joy to the few remaining people there.

As Shabbos finished and Yom Tov came in, Eli was craving for a cigarette. Not that I condone smoking, but he asked me to help him look for an existing flame to light his cigarette off, and we looked all over, but couldn’t find one. We also looked for the non-Jewish caretaker to help us out, but we couldn’t find him either. By this point Eli was getting a bit desperate so he went out to the street to see if he could find a passer by to light his cigarette.
