The Weekly D’Var Torah – Rosh Hashanah

Rosh HaShanna is the first and most important holiday of the year; it commemorates the exact date that G-d put the finishing touch on the world by creating man.

The main ‘Mitzvah’ of this day, the first of the year and perhaps the most important commandment in Judaism is sounding the Shofar.

Besides the fact that the Shofar announces that Judaism is the only religion that celebrates and sanctifies the creation of the world, it also commemorates and reminds us of the reason that man was created; namely to be partners with G-d in maintaining and improving the entire creation…. by doing His commandments!

Picture of the Night?!

The driver along with a partial view of the group in the truck.

Driving past 770 at 1:00am I was treated to a bizarre and shocking display of complete disregard of safety and people being reduced to the lowest levels of what standards we regard as ‘normal living’.

Nearly 50 young Israeli girls crammed into the back of a box truck along with luggage were being transported from 770 to a house on President and New York where they will be staying for the month of Tishrai.

Another Accident On Empire and Troy

Tuesday evening at around 7:30 a Jewish member of the community was heading down Empire Blvd from Schenectady Ave towards Albany Ave when a car headed in the opposite direction attempted to make a sudden left turn up Troy Ave causing a collision.

The driver who tried to pull the turn onto Albany driving a Red Minivan was struck on its side by the large SUV, driven by the yiddishe driver, causing the minivan to spin a full 360 degrees. In such cases drivers waiting to turn do not have the right of way.

Challah challenge

Herald Tribune

Venice, FL – Rivka Schmerling grew up in Brooklyn with a grandmother who would bake challah for everyone. If they needed more, they could walk to a bakery down the block.

Schmerling, 23, started the Chabad of Venice and North Port with her husband, Rabbi Sholom Schmerling, in 2005. As host of holiday and Sabbath dinners often for more than a dozen people, Schmerling had no access to a kosher bakery and no choice but to start baking the traditional Jewish yeast bread.
