Release Time & F.R.E.E Winter Camp Makes A Difference

Winter Camp children and their counselors on an ice skating rink

Just a few short weeks ago Kingston, NY was the site of a life-altering, joyous gathering. Release Time – a project of NCFJE (National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education) and Camp F.R.E.E. (Friends of Refugees of Easter Europe) gave 25 public school children the chance to spend a fun-filled week learning about their Jewish Heritage. The NCFJE’s Released Time Program run by Rabbi Shazak Zirkind and Camp F.R.E.E run by Rabbi Mendel Okunov reaches out to lost Jewish youngsters and exposes them to the beauty and truth of their heritage and religion.

Each day of the exciting and energizing week of winter camp, started with davening and learning, followed by a day-trip to somewhere special. The trips were the perfect opportunity for the children to bond with their devoted counselors as well as experience some of the exciting things to do all around Kingston.

The Weekly Sedra – Va’eira

This week’s section finds Moses face to face with Pharaoh the king of Egypt (according to some, the king of the world) and from the beginning we see the game is fixed and Pharaoh doesn’t stand a chance.

Even before they meet G-d announces, “I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so I can multiply my miracles and signs. And he won’t listen and I will smite Egypt and take my people, the Jews, from Egypt with great miracles. (7:3,4)”

And Pharaoh is certainly no match for the Creator of the universe!

At first glance this is not only unfair, it’s cruel. Why harden Pharaoh’s heart with false confidence in order to add plagues?

Chabad Event To Aid Katrina Victims

With a few spare minutes today and a couple of simple knots, UCSB students can help provide those who were hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina with some much-needed warmth.

Students can make no-sew blankets for Hurricane Katrina victims and their children, as well as the victims themselves, today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Arbor and from 4 to 6 p.m. in Santa Cruz and Francisco Torres Residence Halls. Volunteers can also make blankets from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Chabad House, located at 6655 #B on Abrego Road.

“It’s a way we can help out on a smaller scale, although it’s a huge mitzvah, which is the Hebrew word for a good deed,” Chabad Program Director Rochel Loschak said. “Every blanket counts, and every little good deed we can do makes a better world.”

Fairfax Chabad offers a class in Jewish mysticism.

Rabbi Leibel Fajnland is teaching a Kabbalah course at Chabad Lubavitch of Northern Virginia in Fairfax.

A few years ago, Doris Snyder got the feeling that she had something more to learn about her Jewish faith. She needed answers to questions about things like the Jewish concept of life after death, she said. She had attended programs at Chabad Lubavitch of Northern Virginia, a Jewish outreach organization with a campus in Fairfax, and chanced to see adult education classes offered through the organization.

“I almost tripped over Chabad,” said Snyder. Before long, she and daughter Beth Axelrod were attending every one. Through Chabad, Snyder said, she has studied subjects such as the spiritual issues of right and wrong surrounding the Holocaust, and the stories of Biblical characters in everyday life.

“You come away with knowledge about things on a level you never knew existed before,” said Snyder, comparing the classes to studying philosophy. “It’s that feeling of never getting there, but the pursuit is extremely exciting.”
