Panhandler Calls the Cops on Storeowners

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — Our neighborhood has its fair share of panhandlers in our Shuls, on Kingston, at store entrances asking people to give them Tzedakah. Some are Jewish others are not, some are respectful and some are downright rude! This new face though prefers to call the cops on storeowners who ask him to move along, and we got it all on video.

Last month, four men allegedly surrounded an Israeli man who was visiting Crown Heights for the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur and punched him in the face. The man, 36, knocked on the door of a nearby Jewish home at midnight. The residents called Shomrim, a group of orthodox Jewish men who patrol the neighborhood. The Shomrim arrived at the scene and called police, who are investigating it as a possible hate crime. All four assailants were black.

Keeping It Kosher

Clara Santos Perez, left, the manager of Basil Pizza & Wine Bar, tries to balance inclusion with strict religious customs that are not her own.

“IS HE COMING BACK?” Clara Santos Perez was peering out the windows and across the street, where an imposing man in black stood, his face turned in her direction.

Was he watching? Waiting? Planning to confront her anew? Perez wondered aloud about all of this, wrung her hands and paced. In her agitation and dread she more closely resembled a criminal on the lam than what she really was: a restaurant manager rattled by an unusually troubling customer complaint.

Picture of the Day! Wasting Police Resources!

In their most juvenile move yet the NYPD parked 10 of its vehicles from the 71st Precinct, along with borrowed cars from the task force to take up parking spots on Kingston between Crown and Carroll, all for the sake of preventing Shomrim from parking their Command Post.
