PSA: Have you Been A Victim of the Police?

Dear residents of Crown Heights:

After being victimized by the NYPD in the incident of October 24th in Crown Heights, we have decided to take steps to prevent further similar situations from occurring. Citizens should never be, nor ever fear to be, harassed or to have to spend their time and money on disputing frivolous or fictitious tickets. It is time to stand up for ourselves.

We live in a democracy, where the power rests with the people. Government and public servants, such as the police, are here to serve us and protect us, not prey on us. Unfortunately, they sometimes forget that there are limits to their privileges, specifically unwarranted searches, detainment and tickets. As I am now learning, this forgetfulness often occurs when quotas need to be met and when budgets are tight.

So why not get the charges dismissed and let it fade away? As Benjamin Franklin famously said; “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety”. Each citizen that is a victim of a frivolous ticket to make a quota and doesn’t stand up gives up a bit of their freedom. It is our responsibility to do what’s right for our community, city and country even when inconvenient. Enough people in this city have given up enough freedom where it is time to take a stand and tell the NYPD: enough! Focus on fighting crime and stop preying on innocent citizens.

We have set up an email address to compile as many stories and incidents as we can. We prefer that it is something relevant and happened in this past year, and every incident will remain confidential until the attorney who is assisting us can discuss the incident with you. With enough documented incidents, we will be able to force some level of accountability from NYPD brass and make a credible complaint. Remember: they work for us, not the other way around.

Please e-mail us at nypd.abuse@gmail.com if you feel you have been targeted and have received a false charge or arrest. Please be sure to include the details of the incident, your name and number. Please notify your family and friends to e-mail us if they have a case as well.

EVERY SUBMISSION WILL STAY CONFIDENTIAL.

If need be, we can give you a document assuring your of confidentiality from the attorney who is assisting us.

  • I thank you chinfo

I would like to thank chinfo for always being on the forefront in standing up for the people of ch. Without them there would be more abuse. A big yasher coach to you for concentrating on the safety of us in CH.

    Your friend from the block

  • So true

    Well written.
I hope people do stand up for once. Don’t shy away b/c ur lazy, or b/c the community council members are afraid to mess up their PR etc

    what’s right is right.

    Take a stand.

  • An easier way?

Aren’t the summons issued public record? Would it be easier to contact people using these records?

yes, we do live in a democracy via a republic. and thanks to our men and women in the military. is there a reason why the entire story is not being published. why where the young men issued a summons? not following the government laws, which according to torah, we are obligated to do, these young men refused to listen to the police officers. this is a chiul hashem. i did not go fight a war in afghanistan to come back to this nonsense here in crown heights. a total disrepect to all.

  • STOP HARRASSING INNOCENT PEOPLE

great idea. we need to get the police to work on crime and muggings such as the video that was posted the other day. STOP HARRASSING INNOCENT PEOPLE. WE NEED TO STND UP OR THEY WILL DO IT MORE AND MORE

  • TO sgt leslie wohlfeld

You have no Idea what you are talking about. You are so used to shouting YES SIR! that stopped thinking about the people shouting the commands. When your superior gives you a command you must listen, but we are not beholden to the rules of the US Army. We question if the police are acting justly. We keep if our congress in check. We question the constitutionality of TSA gropes, and we demand more from the President than what we are getting. If you think WE THE PEOPLE are to shout “Yes Sir” at every demand from a federal/state employee – than its WE THE SHEEPLE and that’s not a democracy – it’s a dictatorship!

  • SSGT. Leslie - with that name ....

… I am surprised that you haven’t been bounced out of the military yet. As far as I know, the 9th Circuit granted a stay pending appeal of the District Court’s order banning enforcement of Dont Ask Dont Tell … you should be careful …

Or maybe I shouldn’t be jumping to conclusions (like you did) about your proclivities based on just a few details …

It was 1965. I was eleven tears old. About this time of year. I lived on Troy Ave, corner Rutland Road. I attended Talmud Torah after public school on Tuesday and Thursdays at Shaare Zedek on Kingston Ave. corner Park Place. I was waiting for the school bus in front of our two family house. I was wearing my kippah, and my tztitzis were clearly visible – you got “extra credit” if you walked into school this way. It just so happened that Brooklyn Union Gas had been digging up the street right in front of our home. Traffic cones next to a pile of dirt and asphalt. I was on the sidewalk close to the vacated construction site. A police car pulled up with two police officers. The one in the passenger seat pulled down his window and asked me what I was doing there. Waiting for the bus that will take me to Hebrew School I answered. He turned to his fellow officer, said something to the effect that verified that he too, saw me playing on the dirt pile in the street. He turned to me, and asked why I was lying – I was up to no good. He then said that they would need to bring me to the 71st precinct and arrest me. I was overwhelmed with shock and fear. I immediately started to cry like a small child. The officers had a good laugh and sped away.
Needless to say I was in a state of suspended animation during Hebrew School class. When I returned home, my Father clearly noticed that I was not myself. Vos is gesheein? What happened? I broke down and told him. My Father, OBM, a survivor of ghettos, Auschwitz, and death marches looked at me with compassion and an anger that I only began to understand later in life. He told me that I shouldn’t worry, that police, despite being “protectors of the law”, are human. Even at the age of 12, as child of Holocaust survivors, I knew what “humans” are capable of.

With all this police bashing why would they want to protect us. Yes there are some bad apples. But “this aint Kansas Dorothy!” This is Brooklyn and we are not in a safe part of it and it has never been safe. Only with working with the police are we going to get this place to a modicum of safety. The reason we get some bad apples is that “who wants to risk their lives in a place where they aren’t wanted regardless of pay?” The good ones transfer out of here to cushier neighborhoods where it is alot safer- Nassau county anyone? We need to work with the police. I, for one, would like to thank the good ones who have stayed and are tring to do their best for this commmunity.

To Mother in Ch Wake up open your eyes! The police are not doing their jobs protecting us.Their purpose is to protect & serve the public. They are too busy writing tickets & protecting the black community to care about Jews. They are by 770 only because they have no choice! to the so called Sgt.How in the world did you even make sergeant with a lack of a brain? These Bochurim were doing nothing more than standing on Private property having a conversation when they were suddenly ganged up upon & harassed by these 3 cops. According to you we have no rights & should just shut up about it! what about the woman who had her purse stolen? The other Bochurim who are assaulted chased by by the black… & nothing is done about it!It’s about time that a civil rights lawsuit was brought.this will make The Mayor The NYPD open up their eyes & ears to Reality!!!
