UI dining hall menu modified to accommodate religious needs

Elizabeth Weber – The Daily Illini

Kosher meals are pre-packaged, microwavable

Samantha Staley remembers the struggles of eating in the dormitories.

Having been raised on kosher food, her options at the dining halls were limited and she joked that she lived off cereal as an underclassman.

“My friends would be eating chicken fingers and I couldn’t join them because I was kosher,” said Staley, now a junior in LAS.

The Weekly Sedra – Parshas Vayeitzei

The Rebbe says:

1. The Torah is not a history book. Every story mentioned in the Torah is written for us to learn from. As we know that from one letter in the Torah our Sages learn out many Halachas (laws)!

This is why the Torah has the name “Torah” and not for example “Chochmah – Wisdom”. Seemingly, since Torah is the wisdom of Hashem it should be called “Chochmah – Wisdom”!? Instead Hashem named it “Torah” from the word Hora’ah meaning lesson. Hashem named the Torah “Torah – Lesson” because every detail in the Torah applies to every Jew in every generation to take a lesson from.

Therefore every Parshah in the Torah has its’ special lessons for each and every one of us.

Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine — There’s an elderly Jewish woman named Anna Shevelev living in the lap of luxury, in the Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk. Anna is not heir to a fortune; she never owned more than the clothes on her back. In fact, her own financial assets amount to zero. By all accounts, Anna might well be another statistic of Ukraine’s elderly, below-poverty level demographic.

Chabad Unity Teen Program

Chabad of Boca Raton, Parkland, and Weston each have a teen program called JET (Jewish Experience for Teens). The teens get together every two weeks to learn, have fun, and to spend quality Jewish time together. The youth directors from these Chabad houses, Rabbi Shmuly Gutnick, Rabbi Shuey Biston, and Rabbi Chezky Unsdefer organized a phenomenal unity program.

The three teen groups joined together for a night of fun at the Miami Heat basketball game. The evening was a tremendous success. About 65 teens attended the program. The teens interacted with each other, and made connections with teens from other cities. The teen groups will continue to meet throughout the year. If you have a teen group in Florida and would like to join our unity events, please contact one of the youth directors.
