Lubavitchers Hospitalized During Pesach Getaway

FRANCONIA, NH [CHI] — More than 70 people attending a Pesach getaway in Franconia, New Hampshire became sick after eating food prepared by others attending the getaway, initial cause was determined to be by salmonella.

Starting the first night of Pesach at the Seder people began falling ill with gastrointestinal symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration. A significant number of those who fell ill sought medical attention at the Littleton General Hospital who in turn alerted the New Hampshire Health and Human Services fearing some sort of outbreak.

The incident broke out at the Home Style Pesach getaway in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where approximately 150 were attending. The New Hampshire Health and Human Services reported to the hotel and took samples of the prepared foods while instructing the rest be disposed of, but there was no fear for a widespread outbreak and health officials did not shut down the event.

The New Black Music – A Look into the Jewish Music

By Nati Toker for Haaretz

New York’s Madison Square Garden is used to hosting the home games of the New York Knicks and concerts by performers like Paul McCartney and Bryan Adams. But on a cool night in early March, the hall was filled with thousands of young skullcap-wearing men and ultra-Orthodox women in wigs, who listened and cheered to the strains of Hasidic music.

Starring at the event were singers Mordechai Ben David, Lipa Schmeltzer and Dedi Graucher. The three sang their top hits, based on words from Jewish sources. A similar event was supposed to be held last year before Purim, but a delegation of Israeli Haredi activists turned to the major ultra-Orthodox rabbis and even sent representatives to the homes of rabbis in the United States, to convince them to issue a ban on the performance; the efforts were successful.

The Secret to Chabad Shlichus Success

By Ben Harris for the JTA

Here the Rebbe is enjoining his flock:

Don’t convince yourself that you can live off the fat of the land and reside in these few blocks. Here you have radio and television, fresh milk every day, you can shower twice a day; there is no shortage of kosher milk and kosher bread, and you can serve God here and remain here. Listen! There is a ‘desolate land,’ which is thus far undeveloped spiritually. There are Jews there who don’t even know that they lack anything. You had the unearned privilege to be brought up with Torah and mitzvahs: ‘How lucky we are, how good is our lot.’ Be there for a day, a week, a month, a year, ten years. You won’t have nice clothes and a comfortable home? The Jews in the places you are going also manage without them. Why should you be better? Perhaps they’re better than you. If you have not used your treasures for this, it must bother you. And if you are not pained, then you are lacking in your love of God.

The quote appears in a lengthy piece in New York magazine that, aside from being a pretty astonishing piece of writing, offers the fullest portrait of Gabi and Rivki Holtzberg, the Chabad emissaries killed in Mumbai in November, ever committed to print.
