As in the past, this year, a new nigun was composed in honor of the Rebbe’s birthday that falls on the 11th of Nissan by temimim of Detroit. The nigun integrates the words of the Rebbe’s oncoming ‘kapitel’ of Tehillim chapter 106, beginning with ‘Mi Yemalel Gevuros Hashem Yashmia Kol Tehiloso…’

Bands, Bars and Buffets Its Purim 2007!

Jennifer Anne Perez – Chabad.edu

Los Angeles, CA — If there’s one thing Chabad campus groups across the country will pull out all the stops for this year, it’s Purim. The themes and careful preparation for by far one of the most beloved of celebrations among students could be summed up in three simple words: Do something different.

At the University of Southern California, over the years students have watched their small Purim party evolve into a massive event welcoming more than a thousand people. This year, with on the hour readings of the Megillah, a giant Wild West extravaganza with hourly duels, and a pre-Purim carnival complete with rides and a “Pin the Yarmulke on the Rabbi” game, the university’s Chabad House will no doubt top all previous celebrations.

Saratoga Springs on Monday.

Saratoga Springs, NY — You’ve got to like a holiday that’s symbolized by a cookie.

Rabbi Abba Rubin of Saratoga Chabad uses his car as a mobile billboard for Jewish culture, attaching cutout symbols of the holidays to the roof. While most people with a passing knowledge of Judaism recognize that the menorah symbolizes Hanukkah, the triangle currently sticking up from his burgundy sedan like a shark fin might be a little less recognizable.

Woman Apprehended for Stealing at a L’Chaim

Brooklyn, NY –- Monday night amidst a L’chaim taking place in the Jewish Childrens Museum a few of the participants noticed they were missing some of their personal belongings, and after a quick search they found it to be in the possession of a Jewish woman who was attending the event herself but was not related to any of the families.

Police were called and the woman quickly admitted to what she had done and offered to return the items, which she did. Police asked the victims if they wanted to press charges against the woman to which they all refused but requested she be escorted from the building. Other participants who witnessed the incident said that this woman was known for such incidents in the past and that she has a compulsive stealing problem (also known as Kleptomania).

Birthday of Rosh Yeshiva at Tiferes Bochurim

Morristown, NJ — In the middle of afternoon seder on the 8th of Adar, Rabbi Dubinsky, Rosh Yeshiva of Tiferes Bochurim, threw a surprise farbrengan in honor of his birthday and the upcoming Tes Adar which celebrates the arriving of the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe to America. When the Freideker Rebbe (the previous Rebbe and father-in-law to our Rebbe) came to the United States, the outreach of Chabad Chassidim vastly enhanced. Their mission stemmed back to the Alter Rebbe who claimed that spreading Chassidus in America is a necessary goal in bringing Moshiach. The kelipot that was inhibiting the Yiddishkeit of American Jews caused them to feel that America was a country where religious Judaism had no place (certainly in the public eye). Unfortunately this misconception plagued religious and non-religious Jews alike.

For years, Taglit-birthright israel trips have provided students and young professionals the chance to go to Israel for free during the summer and winter. Starting in 1999, the programs have gradually expanded into serving thousands annually. All told so far, more than 120,000 have taken part in the guided tours.

But this year, even those closest to the program are surprised by the response to the summer trip registration, which opened on Feb. 15.
