Livin’ the Soggy Life

by Elazar Kohen
A Holiday Thought

Life is filled with projects. Projects we take upon ourselves to enhance our lives, to improve our selves, or even just to pass the time.

Anything from spiritual resolutions, to diet & exercise, to writing semi-interesting articles, to squashing a pigeon with a large hammer (vulgar, I know, but hey – these are your projects, not mine…)

Some have a higher frustration rate than others; some take a lot longer; some require a lot more patience and dedication.
But we do our best to try and work through them.

Fort Lauderdale, FL — Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum gave a Fort Lauderdale condo association until 5 p.m. today to change a policy that prohibited display of a Jewish symbol outside the door of a unit.

Earlier this year, the Port Condo Association told tenant Laurie Richter to remove the mezuzah she had attached to her doorframe. The association told her that she was in violation of its policy that forbids residents from placing anything on the exterior of common property.

Two Aspiring Rabbis Visit Santa Cruz to Celebrate Passover

Santa Cruz Sentinel

Santa Cruz, CA — In what he calls his Jewish first-aid kit, Pinchas Taylor, 22, carries the essentials for wishing people a happy Passover this week.

He hits the streets of downtown with his kit swung over his shoulder, wearing a black fedora and matching sport coat, and randomly asks people, “Are you Jewish?”

Some say “no,” and the aspiring rabbi keeps walking down Pacific Avenue. Others ask him for spare change, and he opens up his wallet before he continues his search for Jewish people.

State Set to Install Rt. 17 Median Barriers

Times Herald-Record

Orange County, NY — A state contractor is set to begin installing a metal barrier in the middle of Route 17 next month to prevent cars from crossing the grassy median and colliding with oncoming traffic.

The Department of Transportation had planned to do the work in 2009 but moved up its schedule after a spate of deadly crossover crashes, including one in October in Chester that killed a young New York City couple and left their 10-month-old daughter an orphan.

Passover Comes to Low

by Anastasia Gornick and David Xia – Columbia Daily Spectator

New York, NY — While some students burned the midnight oil in Butler Library on Monday night, many others burned ceremonial candles, kicking off the weeklong Jewish holiday of Passover with traditional seders.

The Chabad Resource Center hosted a seder-a traditional meal during which participants pray, eat ceremonial food, and retell the story of the Jews fleeing from slavery in Egypt-in Low Library Rotunda last night for approximately 70 Columbia students and their guests.

Rabbi Yonah Blum led the seder, which had to be moved from its usual location in the Chabad Center on 113th Street because of the large number of students attending.

From Boredom… To Freedom – 15 Ways to Invigorate Your Seder

By Simon Jacobson

Passover, perhaps like no other holiday, captures the diverse spectrum of religious and spiritual experience, from one extreme to the next.

For the most observant, the Passover Seder is a solemn time, heavily filled with rules and regulations, rich with layers of customs and meanings, to be followed to the tee with all the stringency of Passover laws.

For many the Seder is not quite as intense. Rather it is a nice, nostalgic experience. A time to get together with family and friends. A time to remember history and celebrate our heritage.

NYC’s Letter Carriers to Watch Out for Their Elderly Customers

Click Here for a newscast of this event (NY1)

New York, NY — When mail and newspapers build up at an elderly person’s home, it can be a sign that something is wrong.

Now, the city’s seniors can sign up to have letter carriers keep an extra eye on their mailboxes, and if the bills and magazines are accumulating, emergency contacts are notified so that someone can check on them.

The Carrier Alert program was created decades ago in New York and many other cities nationwide but fizzled out over the years. In some areas, it has experienced a recent resurgence, and now New York is rejoining the initiative, linking it with the city’s 311 telephone information hot line so that carriers have one central place to call.

Bringing the Spirit of Freedom to Israel’s Neediest

R.C. Berman – Lubavitch.com

Kfar Chabad, Israel — During the weeklong holiday of Passover, when crisp flatbread represents freedom and horseradish roots the bitterness of slavery, Chabad’s activities can be viewed as so many bridges across Israel’s many divides: secular and religious, terror victim and bystander, immigrant and sabra native, rich and poor. For 50 years, Tel Adashim, southwest of the Kineret, has cultivated its stance as a thoroughly secular town.
