Blessings Behind Bars

Bochurim Yisroel Silverstein and Reuven Brody at the entrance to the Davis Correctional Facility in Maryland this past summer as part of Aleph Institute’s Nationwide Summer Prison Visitation Program.

Rachel knew it wouldn’t be easy explaining her husband’s prolonged absence. Since she wasn’t about to tell anyone the truth – that Jacob was serving a seven-month prison sentence – the South Florida woman simply decided to curtail her social interactions.

“I don’t want people to ask me,” she said. “No one knows, except for our parents, close family members and one lady in the community I’m close with.”

2 Officers and a Civilian Injured in Late Night Collision

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A violent collision between a police cruiser and Cadillac rocked Eastern Parkway early Friday morning. The incident took place at around 3:30am when police officers from the 77th Precinct responded to call for backup when they hydroplaned in front of 770 and were struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Judge: Storefront Synagogue Can Return

In the fall of 2005, Rabbi Shmuel Posner tried to open Chabad of Nova outreach center at 8608 Griffin Rd. at Timberlake Plaza. But Cooper City wouldn’t permit it, saying places of worship are not allowed in commercial areas.

Once again, the kashrus-observant world is faced with another shechita crisis. The problem effects shechita in America and across the globe. It has recently come to light that three major issues in cattle-raising and meat preservation are having a profound effect on the kashrus of meat.

The first problem involves a surgical procedure to remove excess gas from the stomach of a cow, which results from the common “pen-feeding” of commercial cattle. “Pen-feeding,” where the cattle are kept in pens and fed grain in troughs without room to exercise and eat freely, causes the cows to develop huge amounts of gas in their digestive systems (caused by the fermenting grain). In order to relieve the cows of this gas, farmers do a surgical procedure to puncture the stomach and release the excess gas. This puncture wound renders the cow problematic regarding glatt kosher (and sometimes renders them treif).

While crossing an old rickety bridge the elderly pedestrian started having second thoughts. As the planks crackled and flexed under his weight, he began to pray for mercy: “Dear G-d, if only I will make it across the span I shall award 50% of my net worth to charity, for, what good are my possessions if I'm to lose my life!”

As if in direct response to his prayer the dilapidated bridge suddenly felt more stable and secure. “Oh merciful Lord, I have now but half way to go, keep me safe and I will surely distribute 40% of my wealth to the poor and indigent!” cried the man.

And so it went, the closer he got to the other side the smaller the offering became. From 40% it became 30, then 20, then10. As the ramp on the other side came into clear view the now confident walker boldly declared: “Father in heaven, I think I can really do this on my own. You surely won't mind if I cancel the deal.”

Before he could finish his words, he was knocked off his feet by a sudden quake; the bridge was actually collapsing beneath his feet. “Come on G-d, where is your sense of humor? You know I was only joking”!
