Crown Heights, Brooklyn — At around 11:30am a woman driving a BMW crashed into a reinforced gate of a home at the intersection of Crown Street and Brooklyn Avenue. The car appeared to have been heading down Brooklyn and upon reaching the intersection it lost control and collided with the gate.

Bennington, VT — Two young “roving rabbis” will be visiting town this week, reaching out to the local Jewish community to reinforce pride and enhance education.

Rabbi Eli Rapoport, 20, from London, England, and Rabbi Yaakov Raskin, 19, from Burlington, came here on Friday afternoon. They paid a visit to Rabbi Joshua Boettiger of Bennington’s Congregation Beth El and visited and prayed with a Jewish veteran at the Vermont Veterans Home.

The two men are traveling around Vermont for more than three weeks this summer as part of a program often likened to a “Lubavatcher summer Peace Corps.”

State College, PA — In town for the Zeta Beta Tau national convention, more than 100 of the fraternity’s members partnered with the Lubavitch House at the University of Pennsylvania last week to deliver food packages to needy Philadelphians.

The incident took place on Carroll Street between Kingston and Albany. The burglar told the woman not to yell, and then asked if there were more people in the house to which the woman responded that there were many people in the house.

During the nine days Jews commemorate the destruction of the Holy Temples/Bais Hamikdosh. We mourn the destruction in different ways. We don't celebrate or party, we minimize washing ourselves and our clothing, we don't eat meat etc.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe suggested that during this time of mourning we look for ways to combat the mourning with the permitted joy of Torah learning. Many try to rejoice in Torah every day with the conclusion of a Tractate of Talmud/Siyum.

More than 30 years ago Rabbi Jacob J. Hecht organized Siyumim for the benefit of people who could not make their own by making a Siyum on the radio each night of the nine days.

They know you're referring to people who, while they might have been born into the Christian faith, have since accepted God into their lives in a way they consider both life-altering and life-affirming.

But is there such a thing as a “born again” Jew? Do Jews step back and carefully consider their Jewish practice, life and values? Do they, like many of their Christian neighbors, take the mental, emotional and practical steps to change their lives in search of a deeper meaning and purpose?

The answer is yes, and the term commonly used to describe such Jews is “Baal Teshuva.”

Manhole Fire Burns Two Cars

Crown Heights, Brooklyn — A large column of black smoke was visible just moments ago on Kingston and Eastern Parkway and a strong stench of acidic smoke filled the intersection. A parked minivan was going up in flames as firefighters battled the blaze.
