S PAULO, Brazil — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio joined the Jewish community in ushering in the Jewish New Year with the blowing of the shofar and the distribution of challah dipped in honey .

Systems exist all around us. The way we live; the way we do business. Each element of our lives from the mundane to the sublime — they always come down to some sort of system. RAMLEH, Israel — The following is an excerpt from Israel Behind Bars, a memoir of Rabbi Fishel Jacobs’ experiences as a chaplain in the Israel Prison Service. This tale of spending Yom Kippur with convicted Israeli criminals echoes similar stories shared by Chabad-Lubavitch rabbis and rabbinical students who cater to Jewish prisoners not only in Israel, but in the United States as well. This year, for instance, the Chabad of Houston will host the first ever Yom Kippur services at a penitentiary in Houston, Texas.

Jewish Girl Accosted by Knife Wielding Black Youth

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A Jewish girl, 15, was accosted Thursday evening by a knife wielding black youth on Crown Street. The incident took place as the girl was walking home when the perpetrator approached her on the darkened sidewalk and pulled out a folding knife, upon seeing this she began screaming and called for help.

Lots of residents came pouring out of their houses and managed to apprehend the suspect just a half of a block away on the corner of Crown and Schenectady, where they surrounded him and waited for police, who arrived shortly thereafter.

Attempted Theft of a Bike and Assault

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] – A Bochur on his way home was accosted by a group of Black teen who attempted steal his bike. The incident took place at around 5:30 Thursday afternoon in front of 290 Empire Blvd, between Nostrand and Rogers Ave, there a group of Blacks and Hispanics grabbed him and tried to shove him off his bike.

Hit and Run on Carroll Street

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — At approximately 11:30 Thursday morning a Jaguar with two Black male occupants slammed into a parked car on Carroll Street at the corner of Schenectady Avenue. The car appeared to have been traveling down Schenectady and attempted to make a left turn, and then hit the parked car.
