MILWAUKEE, WI — For some, it’s a matter of pride. For others, it’s about spreading the light of the season.

Whatever the motivation, thousands of Jews around the world are taking part in menorah parades this Hanukkah, a twist on the holiday that’s been gaining popularity thanks in part to promotion of the idea by the international Chabad Lubavitch group.

LONDON, England [CHI] — The Menorah at Trafalgar Square is standing 32 feet tall, weighing just under 13 ton, made out of steel finish in zinc color and is illuminated with cutting edge LED technology.

On Tuesday, the 11th of December, at 5:00 PM the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone and other dignitaries, are expected to attend a special lighting ceremony. The organizers of Chabad of Hendon are expecting 5000 people at the lighting.

CHAMPAIGN, IL [CHI] — Wednesday night about 200 people came to watch chancellor Richard Herman of University of Illinois light the Menorah at Urbana Champiagn on the Quad. The chancellor received a gift from Chabad, a Menorah in the shaped in a school bus. The lighting was followed by a Chanukah party.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum, like his uncle before him, has pierced the “beard threshold.”

That term was coined by Germantown resident Martin Hershkowitz to describe a Department of Defense grooming regulation prohibiting military personnel from having beards.

Menorah Lighting at JRCC in Toronto

THORNHILL, ONT, Canada [CHI] — Menorah Lighting organized by the Jewish Russian Community Center, there were a few hundred people in attendance, including mayor of Toronto and Vaughn, there was a spactacular juggling fire show. Latkes and doughnuts were served and Chanukah Gelt was handed out.

Rabbi Moshe Wilansky lights the Grand Menorah outside Portland City Hall on Tuesday night. He’s been doing it every year since 2001.

A crowd of more than 80 people laughed and cheered Tuesday night at the annual lighting of the Grand Menorah outside Portland City Hall.

The ceremony has marked the beginning of Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish celebration of religious freedom and miracles, in the city for more than two decades.
