Synagogue Might take on Cooper City again over Zoning Laws

In the fall of 2005, Rabbi Shmuel Posner tried to open Chabad of Nova outreach center at 8608 Griffin Rd. at Timberlake Plaza. But Cooper City wouldn’t permit it, saying places of worship are not allowed in commercial areas.

COOPER CITY, FL — Cooper City may be flirting with yet another federal lawsuit centering on religious freedom.

That’s according to the attorneys representing Chabad of Nova and Rabbi Shmuel Posner, who still is waiting for Cooper City to change the zoning laws that got his Orthodox synagogue kicked out of town two years ago.

Chabad Retreat in Salt Lake City Draws Jews from Boise, Plano, Missoula . . .

BOISE, ID — Nadine Veibell is still looking for words to adequately capture her experience at the National Jewish Retreat over the Fourth of July weekend at a resort in Park City, Utah.

“All I can say is ‘Wow!’ I had an awakening. At 41 years old, I found the connection I seemed to be looking for my whole life,” Veibell said.

Two “Missings” Found over the Weekend

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Two people went missing over the weekend, prompting siblings and parents to call Shomrim and initiate a search. The first search began on Shabbos, when a 19 year old girl didn’t return to the apartment she was staying at, after a meal on Friday night.

New Plaque Dedicated in Memory of Detective Russell Timoshenko

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Monday, Police brass and Officers, community activist and leaders along with residents attended a plaque dedication ceremony in front of the 71st precinct this morning. The plaque commemorates the honorable duty Detective Timoshenko did while serving the NYPD and losing his life in the line of duty, the plaque will be mounted on the precinct wall alongside other officers that have lost their life in the line of duty while serving in the 71st precinct.

Jewish outreach program reaches Duluth inmates

DULUTH, MN — Rabbinical students Meir Menkes and Zalmi Klyne have spent the past couple of weeks traveling with an ice chest in the backseat of their rental car, firing up a George Foreman grill to cook their kosher food, staying in Motel 6’s, and visiting Jewish prison inmates in Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana.

NY Times Op-Ed: The Shame of Postville, Iowa

Anyone who has doubts that this country is abusing and terrorizing undocumented immigrant workers should read an essay by Erik Camayd-Freixas, a professor and Spanish-language court interpreter who witnessed the aftermath of a huge immigration workplace raid at a meatpacking plant in Iowa.

The essay chillingly describes what Dr. Camayd-Freixas saw and heard as he translated for some of the nearly 400 undocumented workers who were seized by federal agents at the Agriprocessors kosher plant in Postville in May.

For Chaim Pyekrash, focusing on Torah for a few hours a day was just what he needed after a long career in journalism. Born in Tiberias, Israel, and raised in Pardes Chana, the 76-year-old came to Tel Aviv’s Kolel Tiferet Zekanim Levi Yitzchak, a morning yeshiva for retired men, after 50 years spent as a reporter for the daily Hazofe newspaper.
