The Hidden Spark in Every Jew

by Rabbi Avraham E. Plotkin for the Canadian Jewish News

On my recent trip to Ukraine to celebrate the birthday of my father, I met Sasha, a fellow emissary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and a student of my father. Sasha’s job is to visit Jews in the most remote corners of Ukraine and reconnect them to their roots. He related to me the following story:

“I recently received a strange phone call from a mining company that was digging near Anipoli, a small town in western Ukraine. They claimed to have discovered what appeared to be a mass Jewish grave from the Holocaust. At once, I dropped everything I was doing and contacted the chevra kadisha in Jerusalem, who immediately dispatched a delegation of rabbis to confirm this and help organize a proper burial and monument for these martyrs. A few weeks later, we decided to follow up with a Shabbaton for the relatives, to honour the memory of the martyrs. I brought along with me a group of young yeshiva boys from Kiev, plenty of kosher food and a portable ark with a Torah. It turned out to be a very moving Shabbat indeed, even beyond our wildest dreams.”

Activists Who Exposed Meat Industry Reveal Their Own (Kosher) Identity

Marissa Brostoff – Forward

SLAUGHTERHOUSE TWO: PETA undercover
investigator Philip Schein and his wife, Hannah,
exposed inhumane practices at a kosher meat
plant in Uruguay

When AgriProcessors, America’s largest kosher slaughterhouse, was caught on tape conducting what a federal agency later called “acts of inhumane slaughter,” officials at the plant knew they had been infiltrated by undercover investigators. What the company didn’t know was that two of those infiltrators were a married couple who keep kosher themselves.

Meet Hannah and Philip Schein, undercover investigators for the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Now, for the first time, they are going public with their identities.

Since 2002, the Scheins have taken on about 20 undercover cases, as well as others they have conducted publicly. The targets of their stings have run the gamut from an egg farm managed by Trappist monks, to a Canadian bear-baiting operation that has supplied fur to the British Royal Guards, to songstress Beyoncé Knowles, once an enthusiastic wearer of fur.

Tell Chaya that Mrs. Schneerson from President Street called

“Alle Chassidim zainen dem Rebbe’s kinder (”All Chassidim are the Rebbe’s children).“ This the Rebbetzin would say about her husband’s followers. Just as they were his children, they were hers as well.” The following story, as retold by Rabbi Shmuel Lew, Principal of Lubavitch Girls’ School in London, UK, illustrates the Rebbetzin’s maternal care and concern for the “Rebbe’s daughters” of Bais Rivkah.it’s an excerpt from the new book on the Rebbe to see more Visit: www.inspiringageneration.com

“While my oldest daughter Chaya was studying at Bais Rivkah, in New York, my father- and mother-in-law Rabbi and Mrs. Zalman Jaffe went to visit the Rebbetzin. It was during Tishrei—the start of the Jewish year, a month full of holidays, and an auspicious time for blessings–so they took along with them other family members, including my daughter.
