Elementary Students Summer Birthdays Celebrated
CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — The day of a child’s birthday is one of great pride, a day he grows a year older, and what better way than to celebrate it at school with his classmates in school where he is the center of attention for the day, having a party and giving out doughnuts and nosh. But what about the children whose birthday falls out in the summer, while they are away in camp or day camp?

ULYANOVSK, Russia [CHI] — The Jewish Center of Ulyanovsk has introduced a new course aimed at adults interested in pursuing an intensive Jewish education in a short period of time. LOS ANGELES, CA [CHI] — For weeks Hatmimim Zalman Dubinsky and Nisson Friedman, students in Yeshivas Ohr Elchanan Chabad in Los Angeles, would go into a furniture store and drop off a weekly L’chaim pamphlet by the elderly man, in his mid-to-late eighties, by the desk. “The man you’re looking for is not here” he said every week. “I’ll give it to the owner” he says making sure to show that he wouldn’t read it.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Last night’s, Thursday's 71st precinct council meeting was well attended with a number of Crown Heights Jewish Residents, including a large group of Bochurim from Chovevei Torah who were there following the incident where one of their classmates was injured after being hit by a brick, and approximately 15 Shomrim members. All in attendance had one concern in mind: the recent escalation of beatings and rock throwing at Jewish children.
This concern was apparently not just that of the Jewish crowd, but was also expressed by the NYPD's top cop, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, who attended the meeting, addressing the audience. Mr. Kelly said that despite the recent downturn in the economy, crime is down citywide.

Rabbi Sholom DovBer of Lubavitch (Rashab) saw the issue as a matter of spiritual life and death. Throughout the conference, he railed the government’s plan and even dared to expose the ministers who were kind enough to share the grim prophesy of the impending pogroms.
“It is beyond the capacity of any power on earth,” declared the Rebbe, “to decree over matters of our faith,”even if they might claim jurisdiction over material issues.”
A Wing and A Prayer – The Combination of Effort and Faith
In the year 1910, the Czarist government convened a Rabbinical conference with the explicit aim of meddling in Jewish religious affairs. In good despotic tradition, the participating Rabbis were secretly exposed to a list of 102 Jewish communities where pogroms were to “likely occur” should the conference fail to produce the desired results.
