First Lady Visits Remnants of Prague’s Jewish Community

PRAGUE — Joined by senior White House aides and members of the tribe Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod, first lady Michelle Obama toured Jewish areas of the Czech Republic today: the Pinkas Synagogue, the Old Jewish Cemetery and the Old New Synagogue in Prague’s Jewish Quarter. They were joined by Secret Service agents wearing disposable felt yarmulkes.

Highway Deaths in the US Lowest Since 1960s

WASHINGTON, DC [AP] — U.S. highway deaths in 2008 fell to their lowest level in nearly 50 years, the latest government figures show, as the recession and $4 per gallon gas meant people drove less to save more. Safety experts said record-high seat-belt use, tighter enforcement of drunken driving laws and the work of advocacy groups that encourage safer driving habits contributed to the reduction in deaths.

Jewish Community Grapples With Binghamton Tragedy

BINGHAMTON, NY — Members of Binghamton, N.Y.’s tight-knit Jewish community were in shock over the weekend after the death of Roberta “Bobbie” King, a 72-year-old substitute teacher who was one of 13 killed when a lone gunman opened fire on the downtown American Civic Association.

Pirates Attack Israeli Freight Ship

JERUSALEM [JTA] — Somali pirates attacked a ship belonging to an Israeli freight company.

The ship, which was flying the Maltese flag, did not have any Israeli crew members on board when it was attacked Saturday afternoon, according to reports.

Shomrim Retrieve Stolen Moped

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A Pennsylvania resident received a rude “Brooklyn welcome” when a group of hooligans stole his moped while visiting the borough. The incident began when two members of Shomrim, who were patrolling on Motzai Shabbos, spotted a group of about 20 to 30 Black teens walking down Union Street from New York Avenue to Brooklyn Avenue.

The children get a hands-on matzah-baking experience and learn the ideas behind the precepts of Pesach. Its not easy conveying 3,000-year-old messages to todays children, explained one of the Chabad activists, but were doing it here through an interactive experience.

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — As in the past the Beis Shmuel Shul in Crown Heights arranges their own mitzvah tank on the Yud Aleph Nissan Parade, then today the fathers and children gathered up and took their tank to the Greenpoint neighborhood in Brooklyn for a day of Mivtzoim. The children together with their fathers asked people if they would to put on Tefillin and gave out Matzah along with pamphlets about Pesach.

Birkas HaChama (the blessing of the sun) is a ceremony in which Jews recite a blessing on the Sun as it returns to the place it was appointed during Creation. It occurs every 28 years and always on a Wednesday.

He survived by his wife Etlle, his sons Yonason (Crown Heights), Shmuel (Kfar Chabad, Israel), and his daughter, Chaya Rapporport (Jerusalem, Israel)

The levaya was in Jerusalem Sunday evening.
