DES MOINES, IA — Lawyers for an indicted Postville slaughterhouse executive asked a judge Monday to forbid the use of 32 plant workers as government witnesses because of lies they told to work in the United States illegally and pressure from federal authorities.

The former employees at Agriprocessors Inc. are included on a list of witnesses prosecutors may call in their case against former executive Sholom Rubashkin.

The National Jewish Retreat concluded Sunday after five days of learning and inspiration.The sold out crowd of 600 enjoyed close to 200 lectures and seminars led by Rabbi Manis Friedman who stimulated deep thinking, Rabbi Dr. Immanuel Schochet who demonstrated the philosophical profundity of Yiddishkeit and Rabbi Moshe Bryski who inspired laughter and tears in his packed classrooms.

The allegations raised fresh concerns about the FBI’s true motives in the case which, to the government’s embarrassment, collapsed after four years of pre-trial maneuvers due to lack of evidence.

Because the FBI operation invoked an archaic law to indict the men, attempting to criminalize activities that are acceptable and routine for lobbyists, the Bureau’s actions invite suspicion that its real aim in the bizarre sting was to curb the influential pro-Israel lobby, AIPAC.

By falsely discrediting some of its most prominent members, many now think the FBI was really seeking to weaken and discredit the entire organization.

Rabbi Jacobs was speaking in reaction to the protests and demonstrations that are surrounding the Fifth World Congress of Families in Amsterdam where he is a keynote speaker.

During the conference he discussed the issue of family as the cornerstone of society. The Congress is an international interreligious and interracial conference on family issues.

JLI Retreat Explores Themes of Jewish Empowerment

The Rebbe intended for all of us to be leaders, not followers,” Mr. George Rohr charged a packed hall at the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich, Connecticut. “We may not understand the power we have to impact the world, but it is up to all of us to make this world heavenly. We can’t leave it to the teachers and rabbis.”

The call to action summed up the general sentiment at the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute’s fourth annual retreat, which ended Sunday. Though attendees undoubtedly came to soak up as much wisdom as possible, their purpose was greater than hitting the books.
