Two Jewish Teens Charged in Drag Race that Killed Cousin
Two New York City Jewish teenagers accused of drag racing have been charged in the death of a 12-year-old boy who was injured when the cars collided.
Queens prosecutors say the 16- and 18-year-olds are charged with second-degree manslaughter, among other charges, in the death of Avi Babayev.
The teens are accused of racing up to 76 mph on a street last Wednesday in a 35 mph zone.
Prosecutors say one of the teens lost control of his car, slamming into the other teen’s SUV and striking a parked van.
Babayev was in the back seat of a silver BMW racing a Lexus down Francis Lewis Boulevard in Bayside Wednesday night when the BMW clipped the Lexus and spun out of control before crashing into a parked van.
Firefighters had to cut through the car’s roof to get Avi out.
He suffered a broken pelvis, thighbones, brain swelling, and trauma to his head and torso. He died Sunday.
The teens are each being held on $250,000 bail.
Horrible
Horrible. I know this sounds harsh and makes a sad story sadder but PROSECUTE THE IDIOTS!
CN
Why does a Daily News article identify them as “Jewish teenagers” rather than simply as “teenagers”? Their religion seems irrelevant to the rest of the article.

u r so right! when this happens other times, do they say 2 black teens, to Xtian teens, etc?
I didn’t see the News article, but it seems strange
Concerned
I agree with Cn why do they have to write “Jewish Teens?” What relevance is that? Do you think they would have said two “catholic teens” or two “J-whitness” teens?” Seems like they are trying to make Jews look bad.
Quit the anti-Semitisim claim...
It’s actually the good folks at ch.info trying to let you know why this is relevant to you and I.
The original article has no mention of them being Jewish. (To see the original, visit http://tinyurl.com/ryrslr)
Just another example of why we should not cry wolf with the “anti-Semite” claim.

CN:
Notice how the article is credited to “NY Daily News and CrownHeights.info.” Also notice the use of a first name, rarely used by newspapers: “Firefighters had to cut through the car’s roof to get Avi out.”
It’s a collaberation.
Yitzy
I (thought that I) agree with “me” BUT it doesn’t say that, “Jewish” was edited in for this website. They also seem to have gotten the names wrong.
Also, this is such a sad story but the kids are not criminals they did something terribly wrong that has changed their lives forever. They will always regret it and will need a lot of help dealing with it.
Horrified in Miami
Their “Jewishness” is relevant. As Jewish kids they should know better. I say prosecute till the end so that others will learn.
Anti-semitic journalism
Good point, CN.
Imagine if the article said: Two Christian Teenagers, or two Muslim teenagers………..Surprised at the level of anti-semitism that is openly expressed even in New York City….No doubt about, we are in golus…………
Yeshiva Staff
most yeshivos dont allow bochurim to drive,
the problem is that parents parents dont coaporate and the bochurim dont listen.
either teach them the dangers of driving – or actualy Stop them from driving.
how is a yeshiva bochur supposed to know that if he speeds and drives wild – he could kill someone???

When changing a story it’s better to try and make it obvious that it’s being changed to avoid confusion. It’s the rules of grammar.

To Observer:
It gives dual credit to the Daily News and CrownHeights.info for the article now, but when I read it earlier today it didn’t. That was changed after I posted my comment.

what the hell!! manslaughter!! such BS!! 76 is not drag racing, just going fast!! I feel so sorry for the familys involved and yes they should have known better,
but please, drag racing would be in the 80’s to 100!!
these boys were just young and stupid, needing some adrenaline pumping through their viens! not criminals to be put away for manslaughter! true it kills but they just pushed that accelerator too far in a moment of stupidity..
please think out of the box guys, these kids already have to live with the death on their hands, dont punish them like this!
:(
lets stop arguing..this is just horribly sad i can’t even bare thinking about it
car
who gave these kids a car??

You are 100% right go tell it to Avi’s mother that

I am bewildered as to why anyone needs to have parents? obviously not to teach your children anything.

I remember Avi. Earlier in the summer he was in Lman Achai. May his Neshamah go straight to the Olam Habah
Learning Teacher @ Lman Achai
I was Avi’s learning teacher in Camp L’man Achai earlier this summer. After our first learning class, he came over to me and told me that his Bar Mitzvah is coming up soon and he wants to spend this summer preparing for it. Unfortunately, he never made it to his Bar Mitzvah. I knew him well, he had a heart of gold. He will be sorely missed. Boruch Dayan Ha’emes.

Anon. acquaintance of Camp L-man Achai
I just want to point out that while it is true that he was a camper at L’man Achai (http://www.camplmanachai.com) this summer (5769 – ’09), however it should be noted that the drivers had not been to the camp and had never been. I told the camp they should use this for fundraising that it shows more where boys must be in the summer.
