“They Took My Seemingly Small Loss Seriously, Thank You”

A confrontation between a black woman and a Lubavitcher girl on a subway ended with the theft of a cell phone, and a later attempt to retrieve it yielded a ransom request by the woman from the earlier confrontation. The victim thought of calling Shomrim, but didn’t at first thinking that it wouldn’t be right to trouble them with such a trivial matter, but later called and together they retrieved the phone. The following letter was sent to us by the victim:

To the Shomrim of Crown Heights:

I am writing this letter to express my thanks for what Shomrim did for me this week.

My phone was stolen, and I soon had given up hope on ever retrieving it. That was only until I decided to call Shomrim of course.

How A Cabbie’s Dashboard Sparked A Court Battle

The Globe and Mail

Arieh Perecowicz received six tickets for a total of $1,400 from the Bureau du taxi, a municipal agency whose inspectors ordered the cabbie to remove the items. ‘In 43 years, no one has said they were offended or opened the door to take another taxi,’ he says.

MONTREAL, Canada — Anyone entering Arieh Perecowicz’s taxi in Montreal quickly knows what’s close to the man’s heart. At various places around the dashboard, he’s posted photos of his family, religious artifacts, a couple of flags and a Remembrance Day poppy.

The items have never sparked a customer complaint or interfered with his work, the 65-year-old cabbie says. But it did provoke a series of tickets from Montreal’s taxi agency, which have resulted in a court battle that could test the line between personal and public space.

LONDON, England- Picking his way through the smoke-filled London Underground and beyond the mangled subway car, Rabbi Aryeh Sufrin was unsure of what had just happened. Only later, when the news bulletins revealed that the explosion had been caused by a suicide bomber, did he begin to understand.

It was July 7, 2005, the day that four Muslim extremists detonated backpacks filled with explosives on London’s public transit system, indiscriminately killing 52 commuters.

“The carriage [the bombers were in] was just one in front of me. What if the guy had seen me when he was getting on?” the Rabbi asks. “Would he have chosen my carriage? Would he have stood next to me?”

Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet

Addressing a United Synagogue council meeting this past Monday night, made up of delegates from all the synagogues, Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet, chairman of the Rabbinical Council of the United Synagogue said, “when there is this whole challenge to the legality of Jewish identity – absurd as it may be – it compels us to challenge ourselves and to consider, what are we doing about the morality of Jewish identity?’”

An Appeals Court ruling last month said that Jewish schools in the UK could not discriminate against children with only a Jewish father who identify themselves as Jewish. In response, all Jewish schools implemeted a points system whereby one has to attend synagogue on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
