Fire, Accident, Intoxes and Arrests over Yom Tov

Shmini Atzeres and Simchas Torah brought about the usual dose of Bochurim and Yungerlite saying too much lechaim. This year it came along with a fast moving fire in a Jewish home, with led to the arrest of one Yid, a Bochur who got hit by a car and was injured, and a few other arrests.

Boy, 8, Dies in Blaze

At An Amusement Park, The Thrill Of A Mitzvah

by Adam Dickter – Jewish Week

In my last post I wrote about the legions of people who exploit Sukkot for profit. There’s another group of people I should mention who exploit the holiday for a totally different purpose.

At Pennsylvania’s Hershey Park on Monday, filled almost entirely with Jewish guests celebrating Chol Hamoed courtesy of NCSY, Naftali, Nissim and Mushka Pewzner spent the day with lulav and etrog in hand, offering the thrill-seekers an opportunity to make the blessing in between roller coaster rides. They were undeterred by the pouring rain that lasted most of the day, and at nightfall Mushka said that by their combined tally the siblings, children of the Chabad Lubavitch emissary in Harrisburg, Rabbi Shmuel Pewzner, they had assisted in 825 brachot. They had kept count the way others would track sales profits.

Simchas Torah Children’s Hakafos in 770

Simchas Torah is primarily a Yom Tov which is celebrated as a family. Fathers dance happily together with their children and the Sifrei Torah. For this reason, there will be special Hakofos in 770 where children will be able to experience Hakofos in the Rebbe’s Shul. The Hakofos will only be on Thursday night, the night of Tahalucha. In order for this to proceed in a respectful way, please read the following instructions.

“The Rebbe’s Day”

During the month of Tishrei, each holiday with the Rebbe marked a unique spiritual moment. As the month began in judgment – we pray our fates are written up for good on the High Holidays and sealed on Succoth – it ends in triumph on Simchas Torah, a 48-hour marathon of joy when Hashem Himself celebrates and thousands of Jews, from students to dignitaries, flocked to 770 to rejoice with the Rebbe.

Reminder: Don’t Forget To Make An Eruv Tavshilin

It is forbidden on a holiday to do any act in preparation for the following day,1 even if the following day is Shabbat. However, the sages created a halachic device, called an eruv tavshilin, which allows one to cook food on a holiday day for use on a Shabbat that immediately follows it.
