Remembering the Terror Attack on Chabad in Mumbai

Amid the slaughter, a quiet house was singled out, solely because the residents were Jewish.

Three years ago this weekend, believers of two religions came face to face, with horrific results. It is remembered as the Mumbai Attacks. Over the course of four days, 10 terrorists from the Islamic group Lashkar-e-Taiba perpetrated coordinated attacks on 10 different locations across India’s financial capital. In addition to three hotels, a cinema, and a hospital for women and children, four of the terrorists traveled to the Nariman House, which served as the city’s Chabad Jewish community center.

Crown Heights Girl Saves Forgotten Mass Grave

In the small town of Netishyn, Ukraine, more than 1,500 Jewish bodies are buried in two shallow graves. The bodies are victims of the Einsatzgruppen, Hitler’s infamous para-military death squads that swept through the region in 1941. There is no monument and the victims’ clothing and shoes, along with fragments of Torah scrolls, prayer books and tefillin [phylacteries] still lay on the ground.

All this may change soon, thanks to the efforts of Lea New, a 2008 graduate of Yeshiva University’s Stern College for Women.

During the siege on Mumbai – this Sabbath will mark the third anniversary of its start - the US Consulate in the city were informed that Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg were taken to a hospital unconscious and their son is safe, Wikileaks documents reveal. It also shows that during one point after Nariman House were cleared, the consulate was unable to locate the body of Leibish Teitelbaum in the morgue with other victims, and it searched for it in hospitals and morgues.

Israel’s chief rabbi Yona Metzger is bringing home the bacon. His office says it is primed to allow import of an organic goose grown in Spain that tastes like pork. Metzger says three non-Jewish chefs confirm its swinish flavor. Jewish dietary law strictly forbids eating pork. Metzger’s office says there is no Jewish injunction against eating goose, no matter what it tastes like, as long as it is slaughtered according to Jewish ritual.
