Hillsboro was a city without a Jewish presence. When Carolyn Stearns moved to the town outside Portland, Ore., five years ago with her new husband Daniel, the Brooklyn, N.Y., transplant felt out of place.

Recently, in a clear effort to try and consolidate his control over the Crown Heights community, a sign went up saying that no one is allowed to be Mesader Kidushin in Crown Heights except for the members of the Beis Din.

The occasion was the White House celebration of American Jewish Heritage Month on May 30th, at which some 200 guests enjoyed glatt kosher food, under the supervision of Chabad of Washington in conjunction with the Rabbinical Council of Greater Washington. Rabbi Levi Shemtov of the Chabad of Greater Washington supervised the kosher fare at the event, which included an impressive delegation of the kosher food industry, headed by Alain Bankier of Manischewitz, Greg Rosenbaum of Empire Kosher and Yakov Yarmove of SuperValu.

Over 200 people gathered together last night at Chabad of Boca Raton, FL to witness the Chag HaSmicha – the Ordination of the 14 members of inaugural class of Machon Menachem. A palpable sense of history pervaded the air as the first ever Rabbis to be trained and ordained in Palm Beach county received their Semicha.
It is the most vibrant and powerful demographic, yet it was almost untouched. Overlooked for years by some because of its complex ideology and spirit, teenage outreach was scarce.
