But on the issues of religious freedom and Israel’s right to self-defense, say leaders of American Jewish organizations, former Sen. Arlen Specter – who lost a long battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma Sunday at the age of 82 – left little doubt as to his positions.

Fire Damages Historic Connecticut Synagogue

A fire has damaged the historic Hebrew Congregation of Woodmont, but the synagogue’s Chabad Rabbi, who was on the fire scene Sunday morning is grateful two Torahs, a Shofar and a citron box were saved.

When US Congresswoman Shelley Berkeley (D. Nevada) met Rabbi Shea Harlig twenty one years ago, she tried to hide her skepticism. New to Vegas and just married, Harlig and his wife Dina were reaching out to local Jews, getting acquainted. Berkeley was then Vice President of Government and Legal Affairs at the Sands Hotel.

As the rabbi left her office, she recalls thinking, “This will never happen.”
