Merciful Discipline – Accessing The Kohen Within
The laws of Tzara’at—the biblical skin disease that affected gossipers and slanderers in ancient times, rendering them ritually impure – contain an intriguing anomaly. On the one hand the well-versed sage, not necessarily a Kohan (priest), is empowered to analyze the skin condition to determine whether or not it is Tzara’at. On the other hand, only a Kohen can actually render a person impure. That is to say, regardless of the expert’s opinion, one is not ritually impure until a Kohen utters the words, “You are impure.”

Early this morning a Kvutzeh Bochur was dragged out of his bed by police detectives and arrested. Friends of this Bochur ‘plastered’ 770 with signs and flyers calling Mendy Hendel and a number of his cohorts Mosserim [informers]. During Mincha they physically attacked as well.

Reb Mottel der Shoichet, 97, was a fierce survivor of decades-long Soviet persecution. Exiled to the Soviet gulags for seven years for the crime of Torah study and his connections to Chabad, he went on to serve for decades as Moscow’s only shochet (kosher slaughterer) and mohel (circumciser).
