Chabad Doctor Pinny Young found himself in the right place at the right time. Forced to take an Amtrak train due to weather, he was there to save the life of someone with an airway emergency. The conductors on the train thanked him, and said in their four years as conductors, they have never had such an emergency.

Weekly Story: Dedication and Determination
As this Thursday is the shloshim for my brother HaRav, Hachossid, Hatomin, Reb Yonah, and during shiva many people mentioned to us that they had no idea of the extent of his peulos (activities), I decided to mention a few points that he took tremendous pride in having the zechus to participate in and/or accomplish. This way one can obtain a glimpse of his life and hiskashrus to the Rebbe.

Weekly Letter: A Woman’s Obligation to Learn Torah
After having received the Torah last week – we present a letter in which the Rebbe has some encouraging words for a lady who is active in spreading and strengthening Yiddishkeit – with some interesting points about the learning of Torah in general and the obligation to do so of women in particular.

1,000 Expected at 10th Annual Russian Shabbaton
This February, more than 1,000 Russian-speaking Jews will join together to celebrate Shabbat. The event, held annually at the Crown Plaza in Stamford, CT, is a three-day weekend retreat for generations of Russian Jews, now in the United States.

Shuttered for 332 Years, 13th-Century Budapest Synagogue Hosts a Bar Mitzvah
One of those synagogues, situated near the “Jewish gate” of the walled city of Budapest frequented by Syrian Jews, was discovered in 1964 and made into a museum. Known informally as the Buda Castle Synagogue, it is believed to have been built in the 13th century. Now it is having a Jewish renewal.

Prime Minister of Italy Meets with Chief Rabbi of Russia
During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Chief Rabbi of Russia Rabbi Berel Lazar met with the Italian Prime Minister. It was agreed that 1,000 young Jews would visit the European Union for a conference, forum, and journey, of Torah and education.

Two years after her older sister donated a defibrillator to Beth Rivkah, Chaya Sara Schwartz used her Bas Mitzvah money to sponsor another lifesaving piece of equipment for her school. Shmarya Plotkin, who came up with the initial idea, has raised funds for three defibrillators in Beth Rivkah Academy, one on each floor, and three in Rabbinical College of Canada – Alumni & Archives.

Chabad House Closed Due to Lack of Heat
On Friday afternoon, Ezrath Israel Chabad, (known as the Ellenville Shul) was temporarily shut down by the Buildings Department. Work has already begun, and we hope to have (at least part of) the building open for Shabbos. An emergency fundraising campaign has been started to to cover the short term expenses associated with this project.

Rabbi Simcha Raz is the author of A Tzaddik in Our Time: The Life of Rabbi Aryeh Levin, as well as a number of books about Jewish leaders. He was interviewed in his home in Jerusalem in August of 2010.
