A helicopter was taking off Wednesday afternoon from a helipad in Manhattan, when a failure sent it nearly spinning out of control.
The pilot fought with the helicopter to take it back to land, but lost control as it plummeted into the river.
Immediately before impacting, safety flotation devices deployed on its landing skids, which kept the helicopter afloat.
The pilot was able to exit the helicopter and swim to a nearby ferry, which took him on board.
The pilot was the only occupant of the helicopter, and escaped without an serious injury.
