Jennifer Barrios and Michael Frazier

WOODMERE, NY — At first, Dan Smith wasn’t sure he wanted to bring his toddler, Judah, to another Hanukkah party.

Smith, 31, of Far Rockaway, said he, his wife, and their two children had been at Chabad’s Chanukah Wonderland party in Woodmere Thursday when a BMW sport utility vehicle crashed into the building. The SUV drove over the spot where, seconds before, Smith’s son had stood.

Zalman Nelson – Lubavitch.com

SDEROT, Israel — Israel’s air strikes on Gaza, aimed at bringing relief and restoring some kind of security to the country’s southern residents, have been greeted with an onslaught of more than 150 rocket attacks, chasing many residents out of their homes and cities, and confining the rest to bomb shelters. Chabad centers in Sderot, Ashkelon and Ashdod remain open despite city-wide lockdowns, providing support to residents and soldiers between sirens that give residents 15-20 seconds warning of incoming rocket.

Menorah Lighting Heralds Chanukah

Nick Nelson – LJ World

LAWRENCE, KS — A bitterly cold, dark Sunday night was a little brighter with the help of a 6-foot-tall menorah during the celebration of the first night of Hanukkah. KU’s Chabad Center for Jewish Life kicked off the holiday with latkes, gifts, balloon animals and, of course, lighting the first candle of the menorah.

“I think even though Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday, the message of Hanukkah is so universal,” said Rabbi Zalman Tiechtel, executive director at the Chabad Center.
