Capitol Menorah Lighting Warms Sub Zero Weather

SAINT PAUL, MN [CHI] — Governor Tim Pawlenty lit the Shamosh and Senator Norm Coleman kindled the first light of the giant Capitol Menorah, Sunday evening, the first night of Chanuka in the presence of scores of Minnesotans who braved the frigid sub zero weather to attend the Menorah Lighting ceremony on the grounds of the State Capitol.

Menorah Lighting and Cocktail Party at Victoria’s Parliament House

MELBOURNE, Australia [CHI] — The Chabad House of Melbourne’s Central Business District directed by Rabbi Chaim Herzog held its annual Menorah Lighting and Cocktail Party at the Victorian State Parliament House on the second night of Chanukah. Victoria’s Premier John Brumby and the Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu were in attendance as well as many other politicians, community leaders and members of the community.

Chanukah on Ice in Stavropol

STAVROPOL, Russia [CHI] — This past Sunday 100 Jews from the Southern city of Stavropol gathered in the local ice skating rink to celebrate Chanukah. Jewish music blared from the speakers, as the children, parents, and even the Rabbi skated around. This was followed by the lighting of a Menorah which stood at a meter and a half in height. Gennady Khasminsky, a local actor, told over the story of Chanukah to the 40 children at the event, and Rabbi Zvi Hershcovich spoke about how the candles represent light rising over the darkness, and that we must do good deeds in order to bring Moshiach closer.

PASADENA, CA — Jews throughout the San Gabriel Valley and around the world gathered at sundown Sunday to celebrate the first day of Hanukkah, also known as the festival of lights.

Synagogues and Jewish organizations throughout the region will be hosting traditional candle lighting ceremonies and prayers over the next several days in observance of the eight-day holiday.

Haringey Menorah Lighting

Tzivos Hashem of England put up a Menorah at Alexandra Palace in the borough of Harringey. First night Chanukah a public lighting was held with the Mayor of Haringey and Rabbi Yossi Simon of TH in attendance. The boys of Chayolei Tzivos Hashem sung in a choir. Doughnuts and L’chaim were distributed. The large crowds all in festive moods enjoyed themselves at the Chanukah Lighting.

Judge Again Denies Bail to Rubashkin, Dampening His Hopes to be Released for Chanukah

This time Sholom Rubashkin, 49, is facing federal bank fraud charges. Two weeks ago, he made an initial appearance on federal charges of conspiring to hire undocumented workers and document fraud.
