Cooper City Changes Zoning Code for Religious Groups

John Holland – South Florida Sun-Sentinel

COOPER CITY, FL — After months of what a federal judge described as foot-dragging, city commissioners rushed to fix a zoning law that was tossed out for illegally discriminating against religious groups.

But the 5-0 vote Tuesday allowing religious institutions in business districts may not be a cure at all, lawyers and even one commissioner said. Instead, the new ordinance, which lumps religious organizations into the same category as dance studios, karate schools and other businesses that periodically draw large crowds, faces challenges because it limits their numbers.

Court Rules In Favor of Condo’s Right to Remove Mezuzah

by Rebecca Rosenthal

CHICAGO, IL — A federal court ruling that denied a Chicago condo resident’s right to hang a mezuzah on her front door incensed a local legislator and surprised area rabbis.

“The mezuzah is a symbol that is as important as an American flag. To me, it’s protected by the first amendment,” retired Alderman Burton F. Natarus told Lubavitch.com. “I may have to heat up the drums” and take action against the ruling.

Princeton Chabad rabbi earns chaplaincy status

Marilyn Silverstein – NJ Jewish News

PRINCETON, NJ — In a reversal of a 2007 decision, Princeton University has granted chaplaincy status to Rabbi Eitan Webb, director of Chabad on Campus there.

Webb, who has been a presence on the Princeton campus since 2002, will officially join the ranks of the university’s affiliated chaplains when the academic year begins in September. His colleagues include Rabbi Julie Roth, executive director of the Center for Jewish Life/Hillel, and 12 religious leaders from a variety of Christian denominations.

University president Shirley Tilghman denied Webb’s application for chaplaincy status last year, stating that she wanted to see tangible evidence of cooperation between the CJL and Chabad, according to the Chabad rabbi.
