HILLSIDE, NJ [CHI] — Sunday, June 29, 2008, nine couples from the former Soviet Union were married in a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony, in conjunction with the dedication celebration for the new Bat Sheva~Chaya Esther Mikvah, built by Bris Avrohom of Hillside, New Jersey. The nine brides were privileged to be the first women to use the new Mikvah in preparation for their wedding day.

Community Gathers On First Anniversary Of Officer’s Shooting Death

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [NY1] — The parents of slain Officer Russel Timoshenko lit candles in Brooklyn overnight, marking the one-year anniversary of his shooting death as the three men charged in the case prepared to appear in court.

Timoshenko and partner Herman Yan were both shot as the two stopped a stolen SUV in the Prospect Lefferts Gardens section of Brooklyn at about 2:30 a.m. last year. Timoshenko was shot in the neck and face and died five days later.

More than 1,500 Mourners paid tribute to Rabbi Groner OBM

MELBOURNE, Australia [JTA] — Wednesday’s memorial service for Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Groner, the chief rabbi of Melbourne’s Chabad-Lubavitch community, took place outside the Yeshivah Centre that he built as his Lubavitch headquarters. The ceremony was streamed live on the Internet, allowing thousands around the world to watch it.

Groner died Monday after a long illness.
