New Shluchim to South Carolina

Rabbi Levi and Devorah Leah Marrus of Crown Heights will IYH be moving out on Shlichus to Columbia, South Carolina as Shluchei Torah, where the Marrus’s will be involved in promoting and teaching Adult education, Mrs. Marrus will teach in the Columbia Jewish Day School as well as participating in programming for Chabad of South Carolina.

The new Shluchim were appointed by Rabbi Hesh Epstien, Director of Chabad of South Carolina.

Chabad Bochur Beaten in Paris

PAIRS, France [INN] — A 17-year-old Lubavitcher Hassid was walking near his home in a Jewish neighborhood in France on Friday night when he was brutally attacked by several youths with metal pipes. Passers-by alerted police, and he was brought to a hospital, where doctors are working to save his life.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is scheduled to arrive in Israel Sunday evening for a three-day visit, condemned the attack in a Saturday night announcement. “The President promises the victim and his family his support and his determination to fight against all forms of racism and anti-Semitism,” his office stated.

Shomrim Apprehend Shoplifter

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Earlier this afternoon Shomrim responded to a call from a store manager saying that he was in pursuit of a shoplifter, a number of members responded and caught up with the shoplifter, an older Black woman, on the corner of Carroll and Brooklyn who willingly stopped and began apologizing for the theft.

New Children’s Program at Donetsk JCC

DONETSK, Ukraine — The Jewish Community Center in Donetsk has launched a new program for children, entitled ‘Yeladim’. This new initiative involves both girls and boys, who are able to visit the JCC every day. There, they are able to spend some quality time engaged in a rich program they should find amusing, educational and interesting.

Under the supervision of mentors, children may take part in a variety of activities including computer lessons, psychological and developmental exercises, a craft workshop, sports, games, and talks about Jewish traditions. These enthusiasts also have the opportunity to take part in various organized group outings.

Bill Passed Authorizes Traffic Agents To Enforce “Block the Box” Violators

ALBANY, NY [NY1] — City and state officials are looking to up the ante on drivers who sit the middle of an intersection.

It’s already illegal to “block the box” –- but currently, only police officers are allowed to hand out tickets. However, today the State Senate and Assembly passed legislation that increases enforcement by giving traffic enforcement agents the right to ticket drivers, as well. They also want to double fines.
